are astral dreadnoughts (which happens to be my avatar) related to beholder?

both have one big eye that projects an antimagic cone, and they both have a giant mouth, and there is something else similar about them that I can't quite put my finger on

It depends on what kind of campaign you are running/are in. When you think about it, a beholder has one eye and multiple eye stalkes, which all have magical abilities. Still, just looking at the pictures and discription, I feel like you do, that there is something similar about them that I can't put my finger on. Maby its the skin color...

Anyway, you also have to consider that they live in totally different enviorments, a beholder underground and an Astral Dreadnaught on the astral plain. Perhaps they are some ancient variety of beholder, seperated and mutated by the anger of a god or freak magical accident. Or maby even a crossbreed of a beholder and something else, or something hatched from a beholder egg that underwent a strange ritiual. I think i will use this in my campaign.

No, there's no link between them.

Beholders all originally spring from forebearers created (intentionally or not) by the entity, and beholder goddess, The Great Mother in the Abyss.

Astral Dreadnaughts are native to the astral, as far as anyone knows, and or unknown origin. They do however appear to have some tenuous link to the being known as the Guardian of Dead Gods (formerly known as Anubis, having become something... else... after voluntarily shedding his divinity and becoming obsessed with, well, the mortality of deities and their eventual, perhaps inevitable, transition to nameless, forgotten husks of dead belief manifest as hunks of rock on the Astral).

I think we can say there's no offical link between them.

Should someone feel like there could be, and for their game such a connection works, then there can be a link.

this post is contradictory! you say that there is no connection! then you say the origins may be unknown!
