Is it alright for a beholder to move - shooting its rays as it does so - since it is a free action.

In other words can the beholder use say a circular movement in order to focus all rays at a square. Since the direction of the beholder can be freely changed in each square moved into etc. can it be envisioned that it is rotating and spinning in such a manner as to get off more than three rays on a target square etc.? The restriction on focusing eye rays - is that assuming it has no movement left?

Can the main eye be closed while the free action rays are being fired and then opened up after they are done?

Anyway looking for how DM's play this BBEG? I'd like to hear from you.

Exactly!
That's why I love them as DM.
However, the main eye can be opened/closed only one time in a round.

From SRD (or resonable facsimile thereof):

Free Action

Free actions consume a very small amount of time and effort. You can perform one or more free actions while taking another action normally. However, there are reasonable limits on what you can really do for free.

Note the "reasonable limit"....

Now, since the MM states that the beholder can only fire into one 90 degree quadrant with 3 rays, it appears they are placing some limitation on them. So, now you look at the Flyby Attack in the feat list...I guess you have to ask yourself if the limit they placed on the beholder ray attacks of 3 per quadrant already took into account that as well?
