| Return of the Flumph11-27-06, 06:15 PM | In my campaign world, there is a Plane of Dreams. I've been coming up with creatures for it (I invented a new "dream" creature type). Here is one that could use some critique. Kingfish Small Dream (extraplanar) Hit Dice: 18d8+54 (135 hp) Initiative: +4 (Dex) Speed: fly 60 ft/swim 60 Armor Class: 30 (10+1 size+4 dex+8 nat+7 def), touch 22, flat-footed 19 Base Attack/Grapple: +12/+9 Attack: slam +17 melee (1d6+1 and sun strike) Space/Reach: 5 ft./0 ft. Special Attacks: Know Alignment, Blinding Glory, Spell-Like Abilities, Spells Special Qualities: DR/+2, SR 26, fast healing 10, dream traits Saves: Fort +16, Ref +9, Will +21 Abilities: Str 12, Dex 18, Con 16, Int 20, Wis 26, Cha 24 Feats: Flyby Attack, Dodge, Quicken Spell-Like Ability (ghost form), Empower Spell-Like Ability (cure light wounds, sunbeam), Maximize Spell-Like Ability (cure light wounds) Challenge Rating: 15 Treasure: standard Alignment: Usually lawful good Advancement: 19-36 (Small), 37-54 (Medium), 55-72 (Large) Through the air swims a large salmon of solid gold. Its eyes resemble rubies, and its golden scales give off a gentle, yellow light. Native to the dreamworld, kingfish are born of the dreams of good preists and paladins who fantasize about the glory of cosmic virtue. Often serving as intermediaries between the celestial chorus and their dreaming worshippers, kingfish are some of the wisest and most benevolent of dreams. They are usually friendly to good aligned plane hoppers. They usually inhabit lonely, pristine areas of the Plane of Dreams, such as mountains, rivers, or deep oceans. They encourage other good beings who set up house nearby, but will chase away nightmares of any sort. Although they can be visited by planar travelers, kingfish most often appear in the dreams of holy folk, giving them a message from above. Kinfish speak common, oneirian, and celestial. Combat Sun Strike (Su): Anyone struck by a kingfish is affected as if by a sunbeam spell, taking 3d6 extra points of damage. Those who fail a fortitude save (DC 26) are also blinded. This attack deals 18d6 damage to undead, and destroys any who are vulnerable to sunlight (such as vampires) if they fail their saves. Know Alignment (Su): A kingfish immediately knows the alignment of any creature that comes within twenty feet. Mindblank and protection from scrying can block this effect. Blinding Glory (Su): At will, a kingfish can give off a bright flash of golden light. All who look at it must succeed at a reflex save (DC 26) or be blinded for 2d4 rounds. A successful save means that the creature is merely dazzled. The save is charisma based. Spell-Like Abilities (Sp): At will-cure light wounds, invisibility, ghost form, aid, protection from evil, arcane mark, scare 3/day-sunbeam, owl’s wisdom, emotion, mirror image, dispel magic, tongues, polymorph, dispel evil 1/day-heal, sunburst, holy word, imprisonment, freedom, restoration, righteous might, power word: stun, raise dead, sympathy, augury, antipathy, hero’s feast, dream. These all as cast by a twentieth level cleric. Spells (Sp): A kingfish can cast spells as a fourteenth level cleric, with the luck and good domains. Dream Traits: Immune to critical hits, does not need to sleep or breathe, native to Plane of Dreams. |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.11-28-06, 07:47 AM | What are the statistical values for the dream type? I mean, what's the BAB, good saves and bad saves, skill points, etc.? |
| Return of the Flumph12-08-06, 02:11 AM | Dream Type -Base attack bonus 2/3 HD. -d8 hit die. -Good fortitude and will saves. -Immune to critical hits and sneak attack. Still vulnerable to subdual damage, however. -Does not need to eat or sleep. -Extraplanar (native to Plane of Dreams). |
| Morrowner12-08-06, 01:30 PM | Hmm, couldn't you simply make them outsiders, put the CR up 1(Better attacks and saves) and give them something like Dream(ex): Dreams are immune to criticals and attacks that require a discernible anatomy like Skirmish, SA, etc. |
| Return of the Flumph12-08-06, 03:04 PM | Hmm, couldn't you simply make them outsiders, put the CR up 1(Better attacks and saves) and give them something like Dream(ex): Dreams are immune to criticals and attacks that require a discernible anatomy like Skirmish, SA, etc. Maybe that would be better. I'll consider it. |
| Morrowner12-08-06, 03:48 PM | I'm going to try to compare this to core angels. They're readily available and a good way to sort of look at the thing and see how it stacks up against the others. In combat this thing isn't that good...until it pulls off the ridonkulous Polymorph cheese. Might I suggest that you nix that spell and have Sunbeam apply to successful melee hits? In flavor, less damaging. Might want to give the attack the Brilliant Energy ability but say that it applies to constructs, undead, and objects. The creature is primarily a caster, melee is not this guy's bag. The Planetar has a swack ton of goodies yet gets to cast as a Cleric 1 lever higher than its CR. The Kingfish definately needs to be able to cast as a 13-15th level Cleric in my opinion. Pretty good, though. |
| Doom_Linnorm12-08-06, 04:05 PM | I smell The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. (WINDFISH!!!!) But seriously, you've inspired me to use some cool stuff with dreams in my campaign now, thank ye very much kind sir. |
