I would like an answer from MM1, then one for all wotc products if possible.

As DM I'm planning on having a dragon NPC that's of about the same lvl as the PCs and am looking for a good Dragon type. Tell location as well if you would.

thanks much

Well, from your post I hear you saying, "Which is the most powerful Wyrmling Dragon?" Asking which is 'The Best' depends on personal preferences.

So I'll give you the Good Dragons starting ECL

Battle ECL 7, Draconomicon
Brass ECL 6, MM
Bronze ECL 10, MM
Chaos ECL 10, Draconomicon
Copper ECL 7, MM
Gold ECL 12, MM
Oceanus ECL 11, Draconomicon
Radiant ECL 13, Draconomicon
Silver ECL 11, MM

Also Minor Dragons

Faerie Dragon ECL 10, Draconomicon
Pseudodragon ECL 5, MM
Spiked Felldrake ECL 8, Draconomicon

And Templates

Draconic ECL +1, Draconomicon
Half-Dragon ECL +3, MM

Gold dragon in the MM for all purposes?
Second place would be the Silver Dragon with its Paralysis breath.

alright, since I'm the DM i can just change the alignment in some way so good isn't needed.

And stats mean less to me on this occassion than cool abilities, but alternate form doesn't really amaze me since the dragon will likely stay in dragon form most of the time anyways.

actually upon rereading things I see that alternate says something about gaining the physical scores of the new form. Well if that form is a humanoid can you make it a specific humanoid's stats (such as that monster of a 1/2 orc warrior's stats) or is it just the base average from the player's handbook?

Personally, the Shadow Dragon is pretty cool, nothing says power like the ability to sap their life away. For your shapechanging dragon, Golds are more powerful but silvers(IMHO) are much cooler. As for your question on transforming, I'd say take your base scores(without your racial bonuses) and apply the the bonus/penalty as if you were one of that race, only physical abilities of course. But soon you have to worry about how you can assume the form of more than 15 hit dice, so get Shapechange ASAP.

The Prismatic dragon from the Epic Level Handbook at CR 14 with 23 HD, and the Force Dragon from the same book is only slightly less powerful. These two dragons are neutral in alingnment.

The Pyroclastic dragon is nice, what with it's disinigration breath weapon.
