I had this thought earlier today. Being a DM more often than a player, I often stat up NPCs based on character ideas that I know I'll never use. I've never had any of them critiqued because up until now there's been no proper place here for me to post them. They're not really monsters, persay, so I thought posting them on this board might be innapropriate. However, I figured I probably wasn't the only one who enjoyed statting up NPCs/needed NPCs critiqued. Hence, this thread.

C&C is just abbreviated for Critique and Contribute.

So, I'll kick off the thread with something/one I actually just finished statting.

MHAKO

Before you stands what appears to be a small, roughly carved stone statue, in the shape of a small primate. His arms are crossed across his chest, and his lower body seems molded into a conical shape, widening around his waist, that reaches into the ground. The rock begins to splinter as the figure springs to life, leaping out of its stone tomb. The creature's body, although tough and stony, is surprisingly limber.

Boulder Defense (Ex) Mhako can change his shape to a smooth, immobile, boulderlike form. In this form, his damage reduction increases to 15/- and his spell resistance increases to 20, but he cannot move or make attacks. Assuming this form takes a standard action, while returning to his normal form is a free action.

Earth Mastery (Ex) Mhako gains a +1 bonus on attack and damage rolls if both he and his foe are touching the ground. If his foe is airborne or waterborne, he suffers a -4 penalty on attack and damage rolls.

Native Elemental Mhako is native to the Material Plane. He is not subject to spells that banish outsiders or elementals, but is affected by spells that send outsiders or elementals to a plane other than their home plane. He can be raised or resurrected.

Skills Mhako gains a +8 racial bonus on Balance and Climb checks. He can always choose to take 10 on Climb checks, even if rushed or threatened. He uses his Dexterity modifier instead of his Strength modifier for Climb checks.
________________________________________ _________________________________

* Mhako receives a +2 morale bonus on saves against spells from a creature he can recognize as a Red Wizard. (Note: This can be easily altered for a non-FR campaign by simply making the bonus effective against any creature Mhako can identify as an evil spellcaster.)

He's in no way done yet, as he is still missing his skill ranks and possessions, but I've been having trouble with his CR. First off, I can't decide on whether PsyWar is associated or not. If it's not, his CR is 7, by the RAW. That makes sense, at he can't deal out much damage, but his AC is a little bit high for CR7. On the other side of the spectrum, if they are associated, he's CR12. This'd make his AC more reasonable, but he'd get torn apart with below-par damage out.

So, on that note, may the contribution/critiquing begin!

Ew. Hate that format.

Although I have a question:

Why does Boulder Defense grant greater DR than what a boulder would really have? Stone has Hardness 8.

What the heck is an earth elemental monkey?

Monkey with earth elemental template, MotP.

Why does Boulder Defense grant greater DR than what a boulder would really have? Stone has Hardness 8.

It's from the thomil template (UE). And just a name.

Oooo, Earth Elemental Monkey... I like

Love the new format to

Thanks. When I realized that the Thomil template gave an "at least 10 in Int" ability, I thought it'd be perfect for animals. I may write up a 'Stone Guardian' template that combines Earth Elemental and Thomil.

Thanks for the critiquing, everyone. Now time for some contributions!

So, these would be creatures with class levels and templates, right? Not... er... original monsters with original abilities?

Basically, yes. Original monsters and original abilities have this whole board, this thread is for original NPCs with original builds.

Don't forget to add "earth mastery" in the special qualities, courtesy of the Thomil template.

Is this thread for others to critique your NPCs? Or contribute their own? Or both? I ask because there is already a pretty large compilation of NPCs stickied at the top of the DM board (the Encounter Resource).

Both, actually. I wasn't aware that there was an NPC thread on the DM's board. Just checked it out, and it is pretty comprehensive. However, my idea for this thread was more for templated or tweaked NPCs, monstrous and otherwise, like your Half-Illithid Orc Barbarian / Bear Warrior, rather than just stats for Hans, the Expert 3 breadmaker.

On a separate note, why are they posting monsters on the DM's board? Isn't there another place (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=25) for monsters?

So, I guess it's the poster's choice on whether to post their NPCs here or there, but I think it makes bounds more sense to post them here, on the monster's board (although I can understand why you'd post them on the DM's board for other DMs to see).

Chimps "Deadeye" McGee

A burly, sweating dwarf ran into the quiet room, wiping his forehead furiously with a dirty cloth. Tucking it back into his belt, he approached the finely-dressed, dominating man in the middle of room. "It's all gone, boss."

Thise was a period of grim silence as the gilded man examined the room. Bodies lay strewn over tables, blood - some dried, some still fresh - decorated the walls like a grotesque painting, and crossbow bolts could be seem jutting out of any surface that would harbor them. At the far end of the room laid a beaten steel safe. What appeared to be the door and lock lay bloody next to one of the many bodies, bent completely out of shape.

The suited, human man spoke in an eerily calm voice, "Do you mean to tell me that this atrocity was committed by-"

"Yes, sir," the dwarf interjected. "A monkey. In a fedora."

Animal Companion (Ex) Chimps "Deadeye" McGee's animal companion is a hawk by the name of Mickpeck. His stats are as those presented in the Monster Manual with the following changes:

Link (Ex) Chimps "Deadeye" McGee can handle his animal companion as a free action, or push it as a move action. Hed gains a +4 circumstance bonus on all wild empathy checks and Handle Animal checks made regarding Mickpeck

Share Spells (Ex) Chimps "Deadyeye" McGee may have any spell (but not any spell-like ability) he casts upon himself also affect Mickpeck. Mickpeck must be within 5 feet of him at the time of casting to receive the benefit. If the spell or effect has a duration other than instantaneous, it stops affecting Mickpeck if he moves farther than 5 feet away and will not affect him again, even if he returns to Chimps "Deadeye" McGee before the duration expires.

Additionally, Chimps "Deadeye" McGee may cast a spell with a target of "You" on Mickpeck (as a touch range spell) instead of on himself. Chimps "Deadeye" McGee and Mickpeck can share spells even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of the Mickpeck's type (animal).

Favored Enemy (Humans) (Ex) Chimps "Deadeye" McGee gains a +4 bonus on Bluff, Listen, Sense Motive, Spot, Survival, and damage rolls made against humans.

Frightful Presence (Ex) All creatures within 20 feet of Chimps "Deadeye" McGee must make a DC 18 Will save or be shaken until they are out of the range of his presence.

Haste (Su) Chimps "Deadeye" McGee can take one extra partial action per round, as per the haste spell.

Wild Empathy (Ex) Chimps "Deadeye" McGee can improve the attitude of an animal with 1 minute and a successful wild empathy check (+3 modifier).

Oh, oh, let me try! :D

Cesspool

"Sergeant, you really think they're smuggling mithral through the sewers?" asked the new recruit.
"They could be up to anything," replied the balding militia commander. "The less you hear from them, the more they're doing."
"That makes sense, sir."
The ten man milita squad trudged reluctantly through the city sewers, torches and lanterns lighting the way. Five days ago untaxed mithral was found in a gang safehouse, and subsequent investigations pointed to a previously unknown smuggling op. This led the militia to believe that criminal elements were bringing in the goods through the sewers, as all other avenues were vigilantly guarded.

The militia turned a corner and found a small niche with stacks of crates and barrels. The sergeant ordered one man to search the containers while the others kept watch.
"Sir," said the man, "all these boxes have some sort of powder in them." As he said that, there was a flash and a bang, and a burst of flame erupted from the niche. The militia squad fell to the wet floor, clothes and armor aflame. They dropped their torches and lanterns, plunging the tunnel into darkness. The sergeant rolled into a shallow puddle, and managed to extingish the flames on his person. He rose to his feet and drew his sword, looking for any enemies. A spear flew out from the darkness and embedded itself into his throat. As he fell to the floor, he saw the still burning members of his squad being impaled by more spears that appeared out of nowhere. One of them managed to draw his sword, but he could not see his opponent. There was a crash of broken glass, and the militiaman was once more engulfed in flames. He dropped his sword and seconds later caught a spear to the heart. He died in flames, leaving the sergeant as the only survivor. For the moment.

As the life left the sergeant, he heard a strange click and hiss that progressively became louder. In the fading light of his lantern, he saw a strange creature walking towards the niche. Strapped to it's back were a bundle of spears, and its hands had strangely long fingers. It bent down and took one of the dead militia by the leg. To the sergeant's horror, it ripped the leg off and began to eat it. The monstrosity turned toward him, showing it's bug eyes and ant-like mandibles.
"Hot breakfasssst," it hissed, and then the sergeant lost consciousness.

On a separate note, why are they posting monsters on the DM's board? Isn't there another place for monsters? To answer your question, the Encounter Resource (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=299444) is designed to do exactly what its title suggests - be a resource for all kinds of encounters, be they with NPCs, monsters, monster NPCs, groups, cults, traps or whatever. Hence the inclusion of monsters over on the non-monster board. The idea is that you can go to one location, choose your EL, choose what type of encounter you'd like and get instant material. :)
