The creature in front of you looks like a giant black chicken. It stares at you through evil eyes, lets out a small cry, and attacks with a sword that is being held up by invisible hands.

Blacky monsters are evil black chickens with levitating powers and great arcane power.

Combat

Blacky monsters typically attack their enemy from a distance, buffing themselves before using fireball, magic missile, and other spells to attack enemies.

They speak Chicken, and canuse Speak with Animals to speak with chickens as a free action.

Spells (Sp): Blacky monsters use spells as a level 7 sorcerer.
Typical spells known (6/7/6/5, save DC 14+spell level): 0-resistance, acid splash, detect poison, detect magic, read magic, light, ghost sound; 1- magic missile, alarm, mage armour, charm, summon monster I; 2- bull’s strength, invisibility, detect thoughts; 3- fireball, haste.

Unseen Hands (Su): Blacky monsters act as if they have arms with 20ft reach, with their strength bonus. This ability can be dispelled, but resumes 2 rounds later. Blacky monsters can make grapple, sunder or trip attempts from 20ft away, and cannot take attacks of opportunity on the monster, but sunder attempts may be made if the greatsword is in range, instead of making an attack of opportunity on the monster itself. True seeing lets you see a black cord connected from the hand, which appears as a ball of mist, to the beak.

Why are its stats so high? I can understand one or two being above normal, or one being exceptional but to give it so many bonuses is unbalanced.

Somehow a Large evil black chicken with invisible hands wielding a sword is just a tad odd. Why not just give them normal hands (certainly it would make spell casting a lot easier). The cord thing doesn't make a lot of sense in any ecology.

Is the Deflection +6 from the Mage Armor or is it natural? Mage Armor only grants +4. Also, Deflection bonuses don't stack with other deflection bonuses.

Spells: It should be 3rd level spells not 4 (minor typo). However, it doesn't have any language so how can it cast spells using a verbal comonent? If it does have a language, you forgot it.

Colonel Sanders and Harvey Birdman would join forces to rid the world of these unnatural things.

Dear God...please change the name. "Blacky Monster"...no. Just...no.

Aside from that, I find it weird but oddly compelling. Some suggestions:

1: Change the name of "Levitate." Levitating, in D&D, is making yourself float. Call it Telekinesis or Unseen Hands or some such. And I disagree with Debby; I like the poltergeist effect instead of actual hands.

2: More fluff! What mutant ecology conspired to create a 10'-tall, evil, spellcasting chicken? And please, not the old "mad wizard" thing.

3: For God's sake, change the name!!

Armour Class: 16 (–1 size, +3 Dex, +6 deflection), touch 16, flat-footed 13

Armor Class: 18 (–1 size, +3 Dex, +6 deflection), touch 18, flat-footed 15

CR should be 7 or 8 not 10

BY ALL THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY, CHANGE THE NAME

Try adding:

Deflection (Ex): Giant, spellcasting chickens should not exist. Anyone viewing the creture refuses to believe it is real. This disbelief grants the creature a +6 deflection bonus to AC, as it is impossible to be completely accurate against a creature you cannot conceive of existing.

2- bull’s strength, invisibility, detect thoughts; 4- fireball, haste.

Creative counting there. Usually I put a 3 in there somewhere, but who am I to judge? ;)

Is the Deflection +6 from the Mage Armor or is it natural? Mage Armor only grants +4. Also, Deflection bonuses don't stack with other deflection bonuses.

Mage Armor provides an Armor bonus, not a Deflection bonus... also, I would say it is racial rather than natural, seeinng as there is Natural Armor, and it might get confusing to use such terminology. (Someone might ask if "natural" deflection stacks with "manufactured" deflection bonuses, like they do with armor...)

---

I would agree with most of what has been said. I like the idea or renaming Telekinesis to Unseen Hands, as per Talisman's suggestion. I also like the write up that NRT gave for the Deflection bonus.

Unless the chicken is using it's hands to lift itself into the air, then the name Levitation is a bit misleading, at least with regard to me.

Unlike other critics, I don't honestly care what you call the critter...

Unlike other critics, I don't honestly care what you call the critter...

But I do.

I give you props for creating an original (albeit weird as hell) idea for a monster.

Originality is rare nowadays.

That being said, please change the name.

"Blacky monster?!"

WTF?!?

I stand corrected. However, the AC is still messed up. It should have a +4 armor bonus for the mage armor. There is no source listed for deflection bonus and I should have noted that Mage Armor gives an armor bonus not a deflection bonus. I still don't get the +6 deflection bonus.

The Unseen hands works a bit better for me than the original. How thick is the cord and how easy is it to cut? I am under the impression that cutting the cord would force the blacky to drop its greatsword since it weilds it two-handed. BTW, this is a Large greatsword is it not?

I've been thinking about a Blacky Monster necromancer. Some what reminiscent of this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Talon_(comics)) guy.

Now what do you think about the idea of a giant Evil chicken necromancer?

I had never heard of this Black Talon before, but now I face an inescapable conclusion: Comic book writers are insane, and... well, actually that is all.

I don't see a problem with the name. It made me lol. I assume from your wording that Chicken is an actual spoken language?

They speak Chicken, and canuse Speak with Animals to speak with chickens as a free action.

So in that case could one spend skill points and learn to speak chicken and thus gain the ability to effectively communicate with chickens?

That would amuse me.

It is a chicken...that is NOT a chicken :O

Actually, to answer Masakari4488's question (to the best of my ability), it seems that the OP was saying this:

Blacky Monsters speak Chicken. Chickens speak Animal, with a chicken-ish dialect, and BM's can communicate with them via a permanent narrow-scope speak with animals effect. So true chickens do not, in fact, speak Chicken... paradoxically. ;)

Yeah, my bard is still going to spend a skill point to learn "chicken". Then he will compose epic ballads, aimed at the blacky monster audience. ?????. Profit!

Wrong! Just. So. Damn. WRONG.

Could you imagine one of these things acting as a blackguards mount? I can. And the image burns. It burns so bad...
