Sorry, but a flashy subject line tends to draw more attention ,)
I am a bit confused over the contigent healing ability of the bleakborn ( Monster introduced in Libris Mortis). It reads " contingent healing 10" and in the text it reads something akin to: " A bleakborn heals only as long as living creatures are within the radius of its heat-draining aura."
Further down it reads that the bleakborn even heal when at 0 or below hitpoints ( which makes them unique and quite dangerous for normally, undead with 0 HP are destroyed).
What exactly, however, does this ability mean? Do they heal 10 points per round as long as someone with body heat is around them?

It's possible but IMO unlikely that someone forgot the fact that undead do not go from 0 to -10 hp. I think the bleakborn wereintentionally made into "resurfacing dead". Almost like the lich and its phylactery.

(Personally, I would house rule that a bleakborn destroyed by a cleric's undead turning ability can't come back this way.)

How to kill one for good? Use protection from cold and isolate the remains in a desolate cold place where it is unlikely that creatures vulnerable to cold would venture. Alternatively, just disintegrate the remains.

As explained on page 86 Libris Mortis,

even if the bleak born is brought to 0 or less hp as long as a living being remains within 30ft (the radius of its heat-draining aura) it heals 10hp per round.

Now

Undead Type: Undead are once-living creatures animated by spiritual or supernatural forces.
Features: An undead creature has the following features.
—12-sided Hit Dice.
—Base attack bonus equal to 1/2 total Hit Dice (as wizard).
—Good Will saves.
—Skill points equal to (4 + Int modifier, minimum 1) per Hit Die, with quadruple skill points for the first Hit Die, if the undead creature has an Intelligence score. However, many undead are mindless and gain no skill points or feats.
Traits: An undead creature possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry).
—No Constitution score.
—Darkvision out to 60 feet.
—Immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects).
—Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, stunning, disease, and death effects.
—Not subject to critical hits, nonlethal damage, ability drain, or energy drain. Immune to damage to its physical ability scores (Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution), as well as to fatigue and exhaustion effects.
—Cannot heal damage on its own if it has no Intelligence score, although it can be healed. Negative energy (such as an inflict spell) can heal undead creatures. The fast healing special quality works regardless of the creature’s Intelligence score.
—Immunity to any effect that requires a Fortitude save (unless the effect also works on objects or is harmless).
—Uses its Charisma modifier for Concentration checks.
—Not at risk of death from massive damage, but when reduced to 0 hit points or less, it is immediately destroyed.
—Not affected by raise dead and reincarnate spells or abilities. Resurrection and true resurrection can affect undead creatures. These spells turn undead creatures back into the living creatures they were before becoming undead.
—Proficient with its natural weapons, all simple weapons, and any weapons mentioned in its entry.
—Proficient with whatever type of armor (light, medium, or heavy) it is described as wearing, as well as all lighter types. Undead not indicated as wearing armor are not proficient with armor. Undead are proficient with shields if they are proficient with any form of armor.
—Undead do not breathe, eat, or sleep.

Since it heals, conditionally, even if reduced to 0 or less hitpoints that means it can not be permanently vaquished. Note it is diet dependant so if isolated or imprisoned it is rendered harmless. This are indeed re-occuring undead, not unlike 15 HD ghosts, and require special steps to defeat. (note: Resurrection is a very good way to handle these pesky undead without jumping through hoops, [true resurrection for ghosts])

Thanks for the replies...I understand now...but isn't the CR a bit low?

...but isn't the CR a bit low?

CR 7? Not really, at least not because of the contingent healing ability. You take it down once - it's "defeated", you get XP according to CR. It comes back later (not in the same encounter), you start over again, same CR.

Of course, if you can't put it down so that it stays down for a couple of rounds but instead comes right back at you, you get squat...

While we're on the subject, the person who names the creature credited with creation of the Bleakborn undead first gets a cookie. ;)
(Hint: It's not mentioned in the creature description text)

No, you were right the first time, it was Orcus. Here's a :cookie: .

Now, for bonus crumbs, what was the name of the world that Orcus destroyed while dealing with Moil City and creating the bleakborn? And no peeking (http://www.planewalker.com/forums/viewTopic.php?intTopicID=291)!
