| The Vorpal Tribble11-21-05, 05:00 PM | When I aquired Unearthed Arcana I only gave a passing glance over the bloodlines, as they just didn't really impress me much. That is, until one of my players asked to play a Vampire bloodline. Then I went and looked closer at the stuff. It was then my eyes began to bleed... How, may I ask, can a DEAD being have offspring? Then I looked farther... Fire elemental bloodline?! Besides the blatantly obvious fact that that is basically impossible, I didn't even think they could reproduce in any way. Creatures like djinn who are fire elemental based I could comprehend, no problem, but you can't have kids with a bloody forest fire... Any of you had problems with folks wanting to be the offspring of completely unlikely 'unisons'? -=-=-=-=-=- Tuna Fish Sandwhich Bloodline Character Level Minor 4th -2 on charisma-based checks except for piscenes 8th Mayonaise Addiction 12th Scent ability 16th +6 bonus to craft (sandwhich making) skill checks 20th Reek of the Tuna |

As I recall, UA also gives magic experimentation as a possible cause for certain bloodlines, which would certainly apply in the case of the fire elemental vampire template. Then again, have you seen the movie "Blade", perchance? |

| Wickerbull11-21-05, 08:12 PM | Polymorph + Extend Spell/Persistent Spell feat. That's how I explain all the freaky crossbreeds in my campaign. And I don't worry about the rules of the spell either. I just say polymorph to myself and put it to rest. |

| Thomar_of_Uointer11-21-05, 11:43 PM | The most common result of stuff like this is interbreeding. It's safe to assume that a Mephit or Jinn is capable. Another way of explaining it is planar effects. There can be places where the boundaries between the planes are weak. Eberron does it specifically with manifest zones. Anyone conceived or born in such an area can be tainted by ambient energy. And finally, as a last resort, you blame it on magical experimentation. |
| Slagger the Chuul11-22-05, 02:45 AM | How, may I ask, can a DEAD being have offspring? Well, for a vampire bloodline that doesn't even have to be true. For example, one of your ancestors might have been nearly turned into a vampire, but narrowly survived, leaving a faint vampiric taint in their blood. As the beginning of the bloodlines section mentions, there are all sorts of origins for a bloodline, so you can pick whatever suits your campaign. |

| scienceman4711-22-05, 05:37 AM | "Well son, one night... at the tavern on 5th. I saw your mom... I was crazy drunk... my eyes met hers... she kinda slavered, I slavered right back... maybe it was the haze caused by the sauce I was drinkin, which usually causes blindness... maybe it was cuz she grabbed me by the arm and dragged me into the alley... I dont really know... but that night was magic... foul foul magic... So thats how you were born and how I lost my arm." Father explaining to his half troll son where his mother went And they can get more repellent. Maybe you shouldnt dig too deep, lest ye find something you dont like. |

I'd like to hear a mother explain to her half black dragon son how that night went down. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| Wickerbull11-22-05, 02:58 PM | magic all you want the labor on a titan's kid is going to be murder Not if it's a titaness carrying the child. For those size-different crossbreeds of two sizes or more apart, I always just assume that the male was the smaller parent. Example: A half-ogre, half-gnome would have an ogre mother and a gnome father. I'm becoming slightly uncomfortable. |
