08-14-04, 08:05 PM What would be a partys motivition to adventure with a bodak i have a player who came up with a Bodak template that i and my players deem balanced (only +2 la he has it and we dont play for awhile so i cant post it) but i cant think up good hooks to get him in the game, how would you reccomend i put him in the game. theres 3 other players all level 5, so the +2 la is neg so how and why should he adventure, Align is any non good for the template

08-14-04, 09:30 PM Hmm, a different take than my Bodak template (see thread), but there could certainly be more than one kind of Bodak.

My advice:

First, learn to use proper grammer and spelling so people could have some clue what you are trying to say. Perhaps try going to school.

Second, make sure it's really a +1 LA. Hint: The death gaze thing might play a role in determining that.

Third, make him a former buddy (or relative) of the characters or someone they trust. They knew him while he was alive, but he went off on an adventure, and came back like this, claiming to still be his old self on the inside.

p.s. Sorry to be rude, but it's rude to post as sloppily as you did.

P.S. I don't see how a bodak template could only have a +1 LA, considering that he uses his death gaze passively and that every creature within range has to save every turn. It's possible you guys missed that, but if you gave it any kind of ability boosts, you're looking at some serious imbalance.

Just MHO, though.

Anyway, aside from the family thing, the only thing I could think of to make a party accept a bodak would be to railroad them (have them captured and send said bodak off with them to go do whatever). But that’s never a good idea.

08-15-04, 05:52 PM where are you fools getting +1 LA? it clearly states +2 LA and the death gaze deal is 1/day/5 levels
so the +2 la

08-15-04, 08:07 PM never mind. I should read before posting.

1/day for every 5 levels. Seems balanced, considering that the DC isn't very high (doesn't scale with level). Maybe LA +3 depending how good the rest is.

As for why someone would adventure with a bodak, that is hard to explain.

Maybe the Bodak is (was) a friend of the party who was killed and raised as bodak in just the moment his companions wanted to ressurect him. which lead to that he came back as bodak but retained his original soul/memories or they are slowly resurfacing.
(Take a look a the emancipated spawn PRC in the Savage Species. It might be useful/stylish. Just ignore the create spawn prerequisite.)

:uh-huh: You have READ the Bodak entry in the Monster Manual, right?

I understand the allure, but as it's written, it's completely unusable as a PC...unless the other PC's only come out at night (see Vulnerability to Sunlight), don't mind dying (see Death Gaze), or are immune to said Death Gaze.

If his Bodak template gives him a few stat boosts - and nothing else - and changes his type to Undead, I can see it as +2 LA. But as it's written, it doesn't work.

Unless all the other PC's are undead themselves.
