One of my favorite monsters ever, I wish I could play one!

But I'm unsure of a few rules about them.

1. Can the brain survive without the jar?
2. Is the listed HP for the brain or the jar?
3. Will a shatter spell kill a brain in a jar?
4. Can the brain fly without it's jar?

Regarding 1, 2, and 4, the jar and brain form a single creature; the jar without the brain isn't a creature, and neither is the brain without the jar. Together, they have a single total of hit points, and only together can they fly (because only the combined creature has a fly speed.

This doesn't affect how it might be described by the DM; the description of a brain in a jar taking damage would work equally well as either wounds to the brain, cracks in the jar, or both.

Regarding 3, shatter can't instantly destroy a brain in a jar, because it's a creature, not an object, but it might be able to damage it as though it was a crystalline creature, depending on what your DM thinks is appropriate.
