I'm looking for an interesting kobold warrior-type around CR5 for tonight's game. I didn't have time to draft a custom kobold leader for my band of dog-headed reptiles. If anyone has some stats to share or wants to throw together a cool armor/shield-using kobold for me, that would be AWESOME. :D

I think a dragonwrought kobold warrior4/fighter4 is a cr5...

I once thought of slapping on the dracolich template...paralysing gaze and natural attacks are very devastating at this juncture...

What class do you use? A Paladin of Tyrany 5 would be great.

Blackguard 5 or Battle sorcerer 5 (from Unearthed Arcana)

Half-dragon, and dragon bloodlines are always nice (kobolds like to emphasize their draconic heritige, it makes them feel more important. Chinese emporors claimed draconic heritage too). Also, sorceror power is connected to dragons, and a good mount always looks impresive (dire weasles are common, but a little dragon blood mixed in would set it apart). Kobolds love dragon blood so the leader should have quite a bit. I once accidentally sprung a half dragon kobold on a lvl1-2 group and it killed the fighter in one breath attack.

If he doesn't have too much dragon blood, give him some fun dragon-like effects (elixer of fire breathing).

Dragonwrought sounds cool. What book is that in? Is it a template? Can it be added post-birth (or is it an inherited thing, like half-dragon)?

I'm digging on the idea of a dire weasel mount too. Sounds cool.

I don't want to go the sorcerer route with this guy 'cause he is the leader and I want him to be a warrior who uses metal armor, shield, and weapons. But I do like the idea of using magic items (a la elixir of fire breathing) to give him a dragon flavor. Any other draconic-style magic items you could suggest?

Battle sorceror can have light armor (chain shirt or mitheral medium armor), gets prof with one one-handed or light martial weapon (lance can be used one handed when you're mounted so mabye that will work when mounted), babs are as cleric, and d8 hds, but you get less spells. Or, you can take a single sorc level so you can use wands and non-somatic component spells. In a battle of brute strength kobolds aren't the best bet. You need hit and run, ranged attacks, magic, dragons, numbers, or traps, preferably several or all of these. No full kobold will the strength to beat a like level warband in greatsword and full plate combat. Check out the bloodline rules in the SRD, you might get a couple of free bonuses.

A Dragonwrought Kobold Battle Sorcerer can be really fun. Make sure to look through the Races of the Dragon Web Enhansements for variants to make Kobolds better.

He asked CR 5. That's not CR 5.

Kobold Aristocrat 7, blackguard 1? That could be pretty cool. The necissary ranks in hide combined with his small size could give him a chance of an initial surprise round on the party. Giving him an adamantite warhammer might also let him use that surprise to make good use of both the surprise and the sunder feat if ya get my drift ;)
Add in a few first level warior kobold minions to the ambush to keep the party busy and you have yourself an encounter truly worthy of the kobold reputation for weasily ambushes(add sprinkling of small side tunnels, traps, murder holes, etc. as needed)

The more dragon blood in a kobold the cooler it is (as an individual), and 9 out of 10 *random dragon eats a kobold* I mean all kobolds agree. The only question is if the dragon blood gives magic or longer claws (or both). I would not suggest a full fighter build for a kobold, even a half dragon one. A light, quick matial build, ranged fighter, or light magic fiighter.

Dire weasel mounted Kobold ftr 5- armor him up good, include a reach weapon and a shortbow or javelins, and see if you can get ride-by attack into his feat progression.

Include some warrior kobolds for melee, and at least two kobold warrior archers with either crossbows or composite short/longbows if they have a strength bonus.

The warrior kobolds should be wielding longspears or reach polearms, and should also have javelins.

You may want to include a 3rd level sorcerer as a back-up for the main kobold, include a mostly drained wand of magic missile and maybe a couple of potions for the spellcaster to use if needed (potion of fire breath sounds like a good idea)

If these guys are behaving apropriately for kobolds, they will have set up an ambush point, and will start off their suprise round with a volley of arrows and javelins, concentrating on less sturdy looking targets.

Anything in heavy armor will be magic missiled/scorching rayed and then ride-by-attacked and flanked in subsequent rounds while the archers attempt to finish off any remaining "softer" targets.

A red dragon bloodline would only cost a lvl at most but would give a bit of flavor and some skill bonuses and possibly fire reisistance. Make the battle take place in an arena of his own design. Have high stone walls with balconies filled with his best kobold crossbowmen. Then make him ride-by attack on players. Make him a semi-magical part dragon. Kobolds need dragon blood!

Races of the Dragon.

Is it a template?
Technically it's a feat only attainable at level one.

Can it be added post-birth (or is it an inherited thing, like half-dragon)?

Inherited.

Here you go.:)
Dragonwrought Feat

Benefit: You are a dragon wrought kobold. Your type is dragon rather than humanoid, and you lose the dragonblood subtype. You retain all your other subtypes and your kobold racial traits. Your scales become tinted with a color that matches that of your draconic heritage. As a dragon, you are immune to magic sleep and paralysis effects. You have darkvision out to 60 feet and low-light vision. You gain a +2 racial bonus on the skill indicated for your draconic heritage on the table on page 103.

Kobolds need dragon blood!

I disagree sir. Although the draconic theme is certainly a strong part of kobold uberness and dragon blood being a large part of the Kobold dragon-ey theme thing is a good thing. It is NOT needed and in fact can become quite cliche if every important kobold bad guy the party runs into is a half-dragon or dragon wrought. In my opinion the occasional simple xenophobic isolationalist warlord, tribal leader avenging a (possibly nonexistant and mythical) grudge on a nearby town, and even the kobold cleric devoted to tiamat, amongst others, do just fine without dragon blood.

Thinking about there dragon heritage and encouraging those with more dragon in them makes kobolds feel important (RW humans have done the same thing) and not the phyaically weak, scaly shrimps that the casual observer would see. I think the elite should almost all have a few drops of dragon blood, even if it doesn't increase their abilities.

*ponder* I am feeling nice to my party, right? No 3rd party books?

CR 5 combat Kobold... I'd go with 2 Rang/3 Rog, and just let him at em...
