| Issabella05-15-07, 07:44 PM | Sorry to bother but I had a few questions about raising monsters HD's. Does raising the hit dice of the creature, besides the extra feats, skills and such, but does it raise the level of their spell like effects/supernatural abilities and the corresponding save difficulties? If not, is there/are there feats to boost the save DC's of supernatural and spell like abilities? Thank you in advance |
| Naderion05-15-07, 07:49 PM | Usually, yes it does. In most cases, when you look at the description of the Ability, theres something like 'this ability is Constitution-based' or a small breakdown how the DC was calculated. When there is HD involved, recalculate the DC with the new number of HD. |
| Morwen05-15-07, 08:47 PM | And, there is also at least one feat available to boost save DCs of supernatural and other special abilities: Ability Focus (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsterFeats.htm#abilityFocus) |

Yes and no. Yes, it raises the DCs of a creature's Supernatural & Extraordinary abilities. The formula to calculate the DC of a Su/Ex ability is 10 + 1/2 HD + relevant ability modifier. No, it does not raise a creature's caster level or DC for spell-like abilities. The DC for SLAs is always 10 + spell level + Charisma modifier. The Caster Level for a creature's SLAs is given in the creature's description and is not affected by adding racial HD. (A good house rule is that for each +1 CR gained from advancement by HD adds +1 caster level to Spell-like abilities) |

The gist of it has mostly already been covered, so I will just add on where I can.:) It depends. If the creature's SLAs have a listed caster lv, then it is not improved, unless explicitly stated otherwise. For example, by RAW, a balor advanced to 60HD (cr40) still uses its SLAs at caster lv20. Nor does it sr scale (though most dms typically rule otherwise and at least lets them scale at a 1:1 ratio with cr). If there is no caster lv listed (such as the caster lv for a demon's innate summoning ability), then the default is (caster lv = HD), as per the guidelines at the back of the MM. Same for SU abilities. In this case, yes, extra HD could cause their caster lv to scale accordingly. A notable exception is psionics, where manifestor lv of PSAs (psi-like abilities) automatically scale with HD. And since psionic powers tend to have built-in auto-heighten effects, this directly translates to higher dcs for powers as their manifestor lv improves (though the effective lv remains the same, and could thus still be stymied by effects such as globe of invulnerability).:) |
| Issabella05-16-07, 05:17 PM | are there listed feats for boosting the difficulties and duration of spell and supernatural abilities. Like meta magic feat for those abilities? |

Quite a few actually, but they are scattered around, most can be found in the book of vile darkness and savage species. |
| Issabella05-18-07, 04:48 PM | alrighty I will poke around those books. I wanted to increase the HD cap on a phane's (epic) summoning copy ability. Thanks again for all the help everyone. :) |
