What's it like in Greece anyhow?

I was wondering, what kind of EL is two Bulettes if they work together in a vast plain using their burrow and tremorsense abilities to suprise and flank their enemies from below?

Isn't that a little smart for a bulette? Anyways, according to the v3.5 Monster Manual, their CR would be 7 each. Now if we check the chart on page 49 of the Dungeon Master's Guide it says that two CR 7s equal EL 9.

Since they seem to be rather intelligent for bulettes and are utilizing ambush tactics, the Dungeon Master may want to consider giving the Player Characters 50% more XP than usual. So the XP award (assuming appropriate 9th level characters) would be 2,700 XP (or 1.5 times that amount) divided amongst the members of the adventuring party.

Also, what do you think about a fire giant riding a bulette? Or a red adult dragon for that matter? What kind of EL would that make?

I think such things have been done before. As for the EL...

...Bulette (CR 7) + Fire Giant (CR 10) = EL 10 or 11
...Dragon (CR 15) + Giant (CR 10) = EL 15 or 16

I hope that helps.

The fire giant I could see riding a Bulette. But, the bulette of course would not be able to burrow with a fire giant on its back. However, the fire giant might get more out of the Bulette if he has it as a pet "Fetch the human's horsies, rover!"

The Red dragon would be problem. Can't really imagine a dragon riding anything, and the fear aura it generates could be a problem as well; unless the Bulette was trained - and I don't really see the reddy wasting time doing this (it is chaotic and evil after all, I'd imagine the Bulette would be lunch long before it was trained).

I don't see the two bulettes hunting from ambush and flanking opponents as too far out there; it might be a mated pair that has learned to hunt together (and if they had kids.... ). But the adjustment to XP is probably warranted.
