| nightwing11-29-06, 02:19 PM | I'm updating an old AD&D adventure (Danger at Dunwater, part 2 of the Saltmarsh series) to 3.5. I'd like to replace a gang of bullywugs with something more interesting. Frog-people don't really do it for me (the adventure already has lizard-people and fish-people). The adventure is for levels 2-4, and this encounter should be CR 4 or 5. The setting is in a swamp/marsh. The gang should consist of 1 leader, 3 lieutenants, and 21 warrior-types. Maybe just some swamp-goblin variant? Ideas? Edit: What about goblins with webbed hands and feet, bulgy eyes, using longspears, and have spring attack instead of alertness. Their movement is unaffected by swamp terrain, snow, most rubble, etc. (where usual movement is 1/2 normal speed). Their combat tactic is to jump to 10' from their target, attack with a longspear, then hop back. If the target approaches to 5', the swamp goblin gets an AoO. The group tries to surround the party and attacks from all sides. That gives them a "froggy" feel, while being interesting and cooler than your run-of-the-mill goblins. What special abilities would the lieutenants and leader have? Perhaps druid or ranger levels? GOBLIN, SWAMP Goblin, 1st-Level Warrior Small Humanoid (Goblinoid) Hit Dice: 1d8+1 (5 hp) Initiative: +1 Speed: 30 ft. (6 squares) Armor Class: 12 (+1 size, +1 Dex), touch 12, flat-footed 11 Base Attack/Grapple: +1/–3 Attack: Longspear +2 melee (1d6) or javelin +3 ranged (1d4) Full Attack: Longspear +2 melee (1d6) or javelin +3 ranged (1d4) Space/Reach: 5 ft./5 ft. Special Attacks: — Special Qualities: Low-light vision, 60 ft. Saves: Fort +3, Ref +1, Will –1 Abilities: Str 11, Dex 13, Con 12, Int 10, Wis 9, Cha 6 Skills: Hide +5, Listen +2, Move Silently +5, Spot +2, Swim +4 Feats: Spring Attack Environment: Swamps/marshes Organization: Gang (4–9), band (10–100 plus 100% noncombatants plus 1 3rd-level sergeant per 20 adults and 1 leader of 4th–6th level) Challenge Rating: 1/3 Treasure: Standard Alignment: Usually neutral evil Advancement: By character class Level Adjustment: +0 A swamp goblin stands 3 to 3-1/2 feet tall and weighs 40 to 45 pounds. Its eyes are usually bulgy, dull, and glazed, varying in color from red to yellow. A swamp goblin’s skin color is mottled green and brown; usually all members of a single tribe are about the same color. They have webbed hands and feet. Swamp goblins wear little or no clothing. Swamp goblins speak Goblin; those with Intelligence scores of 12 or higher also speak Common. Most swamp goblins encountered outside their homes are warriors; the information in the statistics block is for one of 1st level. COMBAT Being bullied by bigger, stronger creatures has taught swamp goblins to exploit what few advantages they have: sheer numbers and malicious ingenuity. The concept of a fair fight is meaningless in their society. They favor ambushes, overwhelming odds, dirty tricks, and any other edge they can devise. Goblins have a poor grasp of strategy and are cowardly by nature, tending to flee the field if a battle turns against them. With proper supervision, though, they can implement reasonably complex plans, and in such circumstances their numbers can be a deadly advantage. A band of swamp goblins will usually attempt to surround their prey. Individuals then use their spring attack feat to hop to 10’ from the opponent, attack with their longspears, and then hop back. This allows them to attack and still get consistent attacks of opportunity if the opponent attempts to approach to melee range, without provoking attacks of opportunity from the opponent. Skills: Swamp goblins have a +4 racial bonus on Move Silently and Swim checks. Challenge Rating: Swamp goblins with levels in NPC classes have a CR equal to their character level –2. |

| Selgard12-07-06, 01:15 PM | If you keep the /stats/ the same, you can make the /fluff/ say anything you want. Describe the creature differently, and it doesn't matter that you stole the stats from the Bullywug :) |
