| EvilVegan09-16-07, 12:36 PM | I'm pretty free-form as a DM, I typically make up monsters or just throw on things that I feel should take place depending on various factors. . . Is there a CR calculator for various abilities? Like if I wanted "infected humans" that basically get 18 str, 20 con, +4 natural armor, and 4d8 aberration hit dice, what would that look like CR wise? My guess is about 3. Typically I try to use creatures and just modify flavor, but for some upcoming games I was wanting to make things up. |
| JarionSilverblades09-16-07, 12:44 PM | sounds more like a CR 2 to me. |
| EvilVegan09-16-07, 12:58 PM | I was comparing it to a 3rd level rogue. With the extra hit points and damage they're going to cause about as much trouble as a 3rd level rogue, and probably more. But then there's the whole "PC class level = CR" issue, which in my opinion isn't all that clear cut. My other option was to make them "undead" instead of "aberration" and give them about 5 or 6 hit dice. |
| NobodyRemembersThis09-16-07, 01:26 PM | HD to CR is wierd. It is supposed to be at least equal to the target CR, but no more than 3 times the CR goal. :bored: Check page 296 of the Monster Manual (not in SRD). How about this monster (just created)? The Infected Medium Abberation (augmented humanoid) Hit Dice: 4d8+20 (38 hp) Initiative: +4 Speed: 40 feet (8 squares) AC: 14 (+4 natural armor), touch 10, flat footed 14 Base Attack/Grapple: +3/+7 Attack/Full Attack: Slam +7 melee (1d4+4) or bite +7 melee (1d6+4 plus disease)/Slam +7 melee (1d4+4) and bite +2 melee (1d6+4plus disease) Space/Reach: 5 ft/5 ft Special Attacks: Infection Special Qualities: Hive Mind Saves: Fort +6, Ref +1, Will +4 Abilities:: Str 18, Dex 11, Con 20, Int 6, Wis 11, Cha 4 Skills: Jump +6, Spot +2 Feats: Improved Initiative, Power Attack Environment: Any Organization: Solitary, group (2-5), plague (5-10) Challenge Rating: 2 Treasure: none Alignment: Chaotic Neutral Advancement: 5-6 HD (Medium), 7-12 HD (Large) Level Adjustment: - Infection (Su) - Creatures struck by the infected's bite attack must make a fortitude save (DC 17) or contract the same infection. 24 hours after a failed save, the target begins an agonizing transformation into an infected. Targets infected lose all other hit dice and abilities, slowly (over 1d4+2 days) transforming into on of the infected. Remvoe Disease or remove Curse will cure this affliction. Hive Mind (Ex) - All infected within 1 mile are in constant communication. If one is aware of a particular danger, they all are. If one in a group is not flat-footed, none of them are. No infected in a group is considered flanked unless all of them are. |

Did you just hack my computer?! Most of that stuff is near word for word what my infected do. Even the stats are the same. And the hivemind I didn't mention. You still think CR 2 though? |
| NobodyRemembersThis09-16-07, 01:57 PM | Did you just hack my computer?! Most of that stuff is near word for word what my infected do. Even the stats are the same.Yes. All your internets belong to me! :P I think it is a case of great minds thinking alike. ;) You still think CR 2 though?Maybe drop the HD by 1 (and the relevant abilities). Other than that, yes it is balanced. |
| EvilVegan09-16-07, 02:04 PM | Yes. All your internets belong to me! :P I think it is a case of great minds thinking alike. ;) Maybe drop the HD by 1 (and the relevant abilities). Other than that, yes it is balanced. I will continue to just assume you haxed me! Life is more interesting when you're paranoid. CR 2 is fine, I'm planning on hording them up against two 9th level characters (I've only got 2 players currently :weep: I hate when flakes flake). Minimum XP for maximum carnage YAY! |
| Talisman09-16-07, 03:06 PM | If the ape (4 HD, 21 Str, attack +7, damage 1d6+5) is CR 2, I think these infected guys could safely be called CR 2 as well. They have more hp, slightly weaker attacks, and other stats are about the same. |

| EvilVegan09-18-07, 08:50 AM | I dropped them to CR 2, dropped a hit die and a little bit of con, but I max hit points on my monsters. I then made a more powerful dwarven variant for a CR 4 with 6 hit dice, 23 AC, 2d6+6 damage, powerful charge and leap attack, . . . effectively like a minotaur. Slightly less damage, much higher AC. |
| NobodyRemembersThis09-18-07, 02:55 PM | Sounds good. Make one with 9 HD as an Ogre/small giant variant |
| EvilVegan09-18-07, 04:57 PM | What about a large giant instead? :D I was going to have at least 1, maybe up to 4 giants in the area. Hill giants (or rather my campaign equivalent). |
| NobodyRemembersThis09-21-07, 06:32 PM | A hill Giant would get nasty, quickly. I was thinking a Fomorian, really. Basically an ugly ogre. The Hill Giant might be Overkill. |
