| fishfinger03-22-08, 07:44 PM | my main question is simple how do you protect your Phylactery? heres an example of what i mean, you store it on the plane of shadow in a secret shadow compartment (check spell compendium for shadow bag its an illusion spell) then get a key i dunno what its called but when assembled it opens the door to your Phylactery on the shadow plane, now make it magical make it like one of those rods that if its not assembled properly it teleports to random parts of the world. thats one idea of mine. lets hear yours? |
| Eldritch_Lord03-22-08, 07:54 PM | Well, the Tome of Magic has this handy little utterance (I forget the name at the moment) that will restore any broken item with its magical properties intact if it's used within one round. So, whenever I make a lich, he or she will dominate several truenamers who each know that utterance and put contingent teleport and contingent plane shift on the phylacteries (yes, plural; there's a spell to split one into many) and hides them on many planes; then, if one is ever broken, it plane shifts and teleports to one of those followers, who fixes it and gives it to the lich, who re-does the contingencies and sends it somewhere random. |
| LivingShadow03-22-08, 08:41 PM | Well first of all never carry it on your person. My second suggestion would be to turn something normally not suspected such as a chest with treasure inside (the chest being the Phylactery). My third suggestion would be to use something that easily blends in with others of similar make such as one of the bricks in a building (Or if you're extremely evil a grain of sand in a desert (not my idea and I'm not sure if it's legal)) |
| Shaggy_Shaggs03-22-08, 09:19 PM | Make it a coin and spend it. Just don't make it a sp, too likely to eventually be melted down for a weapon. |
| wraithstrike03-22-08, 10:26 PM | Cast nondetection on the original so it does not show up as a magical item, make false ones. I would also put it is a place that is very dangerous to get to, and would also make whoever is looking for it go on another adventure just to get it. This will at least(hopefully) give you time to regenerate. If you had a right-hand man let him hold it, and when the PC's/NPC's get to him/her they can telelport to somewhere else. Continue until you are alive again. P.S. Make sure he/she has some kind of defense so as to not be surprised. |
| groveborn03-22-08, 10:35 PM | Teleport it to the moon, in a forbiddance. Impossible to get to it, impossible to get it back. Fun. |
| wraithstrike03-22-08, 10:49 PM | Teleport it to the moon, in a forbiddance. Impossible to get to it, impossible to get it back. Fun. Forbiddance makes it difficult not impossible. The creature entering takes damage upon entering, depending on alignment, but gets a will save for half, and it is subject to SR. The spell is also subject to dispel magic if the caster is of a high enough level. They don't have to teleport to the object, just to the area outside of forbiddance, and walk in. There are spells that will allow you to survive without air or you can. The ones that give you construct or undead qualities would be the best ones to use. |
| lord_zack03-22-08, 11:20 PM | Actually I think I'll do that. Except my game world's moon will be inhabited. So my players have to figure out how to get to the moon and then they have to deal with an entire alien world to find the Lich's phylactery. |
| M-bark03-23-08, 01:52 PM | Actually I think I'll do that. Except my game world's moon will be inhabited. So my players have to figure out how to get to the moon and then they have to deal with an entire alien world to find the Lich's phylactery. Sounds a bit like Tales of Symphonia. But Eldritch Lord's suggestion seems like a winner to me. I would put at least one phylactery on the Negative Energy plane, one on the Plane of Shadow, one I would have be a coin and put it in a dragon's hoard (with magic warding to have it register as non-magical by detect magic), and one I would craft from a corpse that I would then have resurrected (if that'd be possible). Or I would have one be made part of a Grisgol, for extra faking the PCs into thinking the Lich would be gone. |
| wraithstrike03-23-08, 02:42 PM | Are you a DM or a player? I am asking because by RAW the phylactery has to be that little box that is in the MM, but if you are the DM you can ignore that and make it into _______. |

I am asking because by RAW the phylactery has to be that little box that is in the MM, but if you are the DM you can ignore that and make it into _______. The phylactery does not HAVE to be that little box. That is merely the most common form. Lookie here: http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/monstersKtoL.html#lich |
| Eldritch_Lord03-23-08, 09:33 PM | The phylactery does not HAVE to be that little box. That is merely the most common form. And even if it did, you could always stick the little box in something else. |

| Grod_The_Giant03-23-08, 10:44 PM | Put it inside an Iron Golem. Cast Mind Blank on both. teleport to another plane (preferably some random layer of the abyess). Cast Imprisonment. Then go back to the Prime Material plane and hide a fake on in some giant volcano Fortress of Doom. Or, get the Tarrasque to swallow it. |
| lunoc03-23-08, 11:09 PM | im no lich, but the stratagy i used was to create it as an artifact that corrupted people, carry it into battle, loose it for a thousand years without realy looking for it, let some creepy anarexic frog guy have it for a wile, then just when the people that want to kill me find out what it is and posses it, i will try and get it back. or B) i could have kept it in my safety deposit box in wisconsin. in retrospect, i probably should have gone with B... |
| pigknight03-23-08, 11:14 PM | I like the grain of sand idea (it's legal, no seriously). |
| Eldritch_Lord03-23-08, 11:22 PM | Put it inside an Iron Golem. Cast Mind Blank on both. teleport to another plane (preferably some random layer of the abyess). Cast Imprisonment. Then go back to the Prime Material plane and hide a fake on in some giant volcano Fortress of Doom. Or, get the Tarrasque to swallow it. 1) How (and why) would you cast mind blank on your phylactery? 2) The tarrasque's stomach acid would destroy it unless you warded it, and you'd still have to make it immune to "crushing" damage (not bludgeoning damage), so that isn't really feasible. |
| wraithstrike03-24-08, 12:00 AM | I like the grain of sand idea (it's legal, no seriously). The magical scripture has to be on the phylactery, and I don't think anyone can write that small. LM page 151 |
| Eldritch_Lord03-24-08, 12:12 AM | The magical scripture has to be on the phylactery, and I don't think anyone can write that small. LM page 151 Shrink item and a magnifying glass? |
| Kao_Unagi03-24-08, 01:20 AM | My phylactery is a (box, next to another box inside a bigger box, next to another box) to the ten-thousandth power. on a demiplane, guarded by my legions of mindless thralls. |
| wraithstrike03-24-08, 01:33 AM | Shrink item and a magnifying glass? It is a grain of sand(requires very lenient DM), now if someone were to shrink(permanently) a larger item that might work, but not a grain of sand. Back to the OP: Are you a DM just trying to make the Phylactery hard to find, or are you, and if so what are you allowed to do? Also, are asking out of curiosity, or is this something you are really trying to do? |
| M-bark03-24-08, 12:39 PM | Put it inside an Iron Golem. Cast Mind Blank on both. teleport to another plane (preferably some random layer of the abyess). Cast Imprisonment. Then go back to the Prime Material plane and hide a fake on in some giant volcano Fortress of Doom. Or, get the Tarrasque to swallow it. What would be better would be if the Terrasque was the phylactery. :D |

| Osedox03-24-08, 04:26 PM | Cast Genesis (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/spells/genesis.htm) in secret and hide your Phylactery in there. No one should know about your demi-plane, so they will not be able to Gate to it. You could use a Clone of yourself to guard it, or a bunch of undead. |
| LivingShadow03-24-08, 04:51 PM | It is a grain of sand(requires very lenient DM), now if someone were to shrink(permanently) a larger item that might work, but not a grain of sand. In that case just use a stone and shrink it to the appropriate size. |
| Eldritch_Lord03-24-08, 05:57 PM | In that case just use a stone and shrink it to the appropriate size. That's what I was referring to with the shrink item remark--find something very small already, write on there, and shrink it further to grain-of-sand size. |

| Eldritch_Lord03-25-08, 12:02 AM | Do you know where this spell is? Ooh, let me see...something tells me...Lost Empires of Faerun? Maybe? Or perhaps Libris Mortis? I just noted the basics on an index card when borrowing whatever book that was and don't have the hardcover version. |
| M-bark03-25-08, 09:40 AM | That's what I was referring to with the shrink item remark--find something very small already, write on there, and shrink it further to grain-of-sand size. Or make it really big, throw it into space, and colonize it. |
| ninja103-25-08, 02:11 PM | I keep mine tucked away in a citadel located on Nerrul's dominant plane. |
| Eldritch_Lord03-25-08, 04:56 PM | Or make it really big, throw it into space, and colonize it. Congratulations! You, my friend, have just made the BBEG and plot arc for my next one-shot. |
