Ok, here's the situation.

We have a level 12 Planar Ranger. (Planar Ranger from Unearthed Arcana)

One of the Planar Ranger's abilities is to apply the celestial or infernal creature template to his animal companion. Applying this template gives him an minimum intelligence of 3.

This guy has a celestial wolf companion. Since it's gained 4 hitdie it has 4 skill points to distribute.

Here's what I need to know.

1. Can a creature with a Int of 3 speak?

2. How many skillpoints does it take to learn a language?

3. Would the need for Handle Animal checks be basically null void if the animal companion could understand fully what his master was saying?

Thanks in advance.

lets see

firstly i think a creature with 3 int can speak because a half ork only needs a minamum of 3 int to be a playable charcter
(ps i think it would speek celestial)

2) sorry dont have my PH to hand i think it is about 2 for class skill and 4 for cross class

3) again i dont know sorry

good luck

1. Can a creature with a Int of 3 speak?

A creature with an intelligence of 3 has the mental capacity to speak and to understand speech. However, most animals lack the physical ability to speak. Thus, a Celestial Animal is capable of understanding speech, but is incapable of actually speaking, as they lack the physical structures to form words.

2. How many skillpoints does it take to learn a language?

Per the Speak Language skill (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/speakLanguage.htm), each rank spent grants one additional language. Since Speak Language is a cross-class skill for most folks, that means it takes two skill points to gain one rank.

3. Would the need for Handle Animal checks be basically null void if the animal companion could understand fully what his master was saying?

Close. You actually cannot use the Handle Animal skill on a creature with an intelligence above 3. However, you might need to use Diplomacy to persuade the animal to take certain dangerous actions, and an intelligence of 3 means that the ability to understand complex commands simply isn't there.

Ruh-roh, Raggy. :teach: That's different. Scooby-do is an awakened animal rather than a celestial animal. The awakened spell specifically mentions adding the ability to speak, while the celestial template does not.
