Can a Summoned Creature Summon? [Archive] - Wizards Community

A creature that has just been summoned cannot use its own summon ability for 1 hour.

11-17-05, 05:26 PM I beileve the rule is found in the text of the Summon Monster spells themselves. Which leads me to this question:
If I turn my staff into a Treant using Changestaff, can it then use the Treant's ability to turn some trees into treants? The Treant's "turn trees into treants" ability specifically states that those new treants can't make any more treants, so there's threat no infinite treant creation.

They animate trees that function physically like treants, but are not treants. They do not have the spell-like abilities of a treant.

No a Summoned Creature does not. However I think a Gated creature can (not 100% sure).

One reason a Summoned Creature can't summon more is pure math.
Had a game back with 1E rules, due to an unavoidable encounter the entire complex was alerted to our presence.
The DM had the various Fiends within the complex start summoning friends each round, by the time we were able to get towards the end, several hours of game time had passed. Needless to say, we entered an Audience Chamber the size of a Football Field (American Football) that was filled with literally Hundreds of Fiends. Whose first action was to hit the entire party with spell-like abilities such as Flame Strike and so forth. The Entire party, except for my character was blasted to atoms in that first strike (I only survived because I had various Elemental Immunities). After getting over the shock, my action was Word of Recall, which got me out of there.
