One of the characters has a spell-storing weapon that has an inflict serious wounds spell in it and he hit one of the constructs. Constructs can't be healed by cure spells, so I assumed they couldn't be hurt by inflict spells. We couldn't find anything in the rules specific to inflict spells and constructs, so the DM ruled that they could be harmed. Anyone know of a specific rule related to this topic. I thought common sense would be enough, but if it's not written down, he assumes it that they will be harmed by the spells. Then again, I could be wrong. |
| Noria Merfolk Mage04-14-04, 05:54 AM | In Tome and Blood, and several other books, there are a series of spells by the names of Cause and Repair [word] damage, where [word] is Light, Moderate, etc. They are identical to the Cure and Inflict spells, but only work on constructs. The implication is thus that constructs are immune to both positive and negative energy, and the healing and harming effects of each. |
| Boondoggle04-14-04, 06:17 AM | Noria, you're mistaken. There are, in fact, repair damage spells, but no cause damage spells. The construct type gives no immunity to inflict spells specifically, but constructs are immune to all necromancy, which includes inflict spells. |
| Noria Merfolk Mage04-14-04, 11:06 AM | You are partially correct. There aren't any Cause Damage spells in the SRD, but I've seen the 2 groups of spells together in that exact form in the Dragonstar Players Guide, which IIRC actually predates Tome and Blood (or close to it). |
| Krelios04-14-04, 11:13 AM | Inflict Light Wounds Necromancy Level: Clr 1, Destruction 1 Components: V, S Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Touch Target: Creature touched Duration: Instantaneous Saving Throw: Will half Spell Resistance: Yes When laying your hand upon a creature, you channel negative energy that deals 1d8 points of damage +1 point per caster level (maximum +5). Since undead are powered by negative energy, this spell cures such a creature of a like amount of damage, rather than harming it. The spell itself does not prohibit it from functioning on constructs. However... Construct Type: A construct is an animated object or artificially constructed creature. Features: A construct has the following features. —10-sided Hit Dice. —Base attack bonus equal to 3/4 total Hit Dice (as cleric). —No good saving throws. —Skill points equal to (2 + Int modifier, minimum 1) per Hit Die, with quadruple skill points for the first Hit Die, if the construct has an Intelligence score. However, most constructs are mindless and gain no skill points or feats. Traits: A construct possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry). —No Constitution score. —Low-light vision. —Darkvision out to 60 feet. —Immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects). —Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, stunning, disease , death effects, and necromancy effects. —Cannot heal damage on their own, but often can be repaired by exposing them to a certain kind of effect (see the creature’s description for details) or through the use of the Craft Construct feat. A construct with the fast healing special quality still benefits from that quality. —Not subject to critical hits, nonlethal damage, ability damage, ability drain, fatigue, exhaustion, or energy drain. —Immunity to any effect that requires a Fortitude save (unless the effect also works on objects, or is harmless). —Not at risk of death from massive damage. Immediately destroyed when reduced to 0 hit points or less. —Since it was never alive, a construct cannot be raised or resurrected. —Because its body is a mass of unliving matter, a construct is hard to destroy. It gains bonus hit points based on size, as shown on the following table. (Table Removed) —Proficient with its natural weapons only, unless generally humanoid in form, in which case proficient with any weapon mentioned in its entry. —Proficient with no armor. —Constructs do not eat, sleep, or breathe. The construct type prohibits this spell from working. |

Well, considering the vast amounts of 3rd party published material, I'm not surprised you found it somewhere. However, here, we usually contain our discussions to WotC material simply because there is so much 3rd party stuff out there. WotC has never published such spells. |
