Does anyone know if a Golem can use a magic item. NOt a magic sword or a command word item. But a magic item like a robe of something.

Thanks.

It depends. If you have to use a standard action to activate the item, the golem would have to be ordered to do so first. But with a command word item, almost definately not because pretty much all golems are mute/not smart enough to learn a language. If it was a magical set of pipes or a horn, than no because golems don't have breath. A piece of magical apparel that is continuos in effect would work, (such as a Robe of Eyes) but you would have to have a golem-size magic item or it wouldn't work for mundane reasons. Things that are use activated I don't think would work because you have to think to use them, and most golems lack intelligence. If their was a golem with an intelligence score of at least 3 I think he could use a use-activated magic item. As for a potion/oil, nay to potions (hence a golems lack of digestive system), yay to oils (you'd have to say: "Rub this stuff all over yourself when you enter combat"). Their's no way a golem could use a spell completion item such as scrolls, staves, and wands, due to the fact that their not smart enough to take class levels. I don't know if youn thought about this, but they can use magic armor too, if you happen to have a golem-sized suit of magic armor. As for magic lenses, like Lenses of Eagle Eye or Lenses of Petrification, the golem would have to have eyes first, i.e. a flesh golem. And thus concludes my lengthy explaination of golems and magic items. Enjoy.

IIRC, Magical clothing and armor resizes to fit its new wearer, so this is not a problem.

Although I realize that a lot of people dislike Savage Species, there is a reference to golems and other mindless creatures using a circlet of intellect to gain an intelligence score, so I would assume that golems are capable of using continuously active items, yes.

However, the golem still wouldn't be all that bright, since the best circlet of intellect is only +6.

Hmm. That might be a mistake in Savage Species then. Having a bonus to a score doesn't apply if you don't have that score.

A Vampire can't wear an Amulet of Health +6 to get 6 con.

A golem could not use oils, as all "oils" have a Spell Resistance entry (Yes (harmless)).

Golems can not lower their SR - as it comes from a different ability and is not true SR - it just works like SR, and thus, oils would not work. Continuous effect items (like putting bracers of armor) would work normally, but it could not use any spell-trigger, spell-completion, command word, command thought, or use activated item - either because of its form or lack of intelligence.

A golem that had an awaken construct spell on it would be intelligent, and able to use use-activated items. If it had levels in a spellcasting class, it could also use the appropriate spell-completion or spell-trigger devices, but it would still suffer from the hinderance of not being able to lower its SR for "friendly" spells.

Savage species has the most errors in it of any book I have seen, so be sure to check what you read there. A creature without a score in Intelligence does NOT have in int of 0, it does not have an intelligence. There is a difference.
