Okay, here's the "monster". Yes, this is a 10th level half-orc (my version of the stats) barbarian as an aflicted lycanthrope. Acording to the CR estimator of the Lycanthrope template, this creature is a CR 12, but without it's equipment I don't see that really working.

When comparing this "creature" with other similar creatures (other than other were creatures), I found that it's CR falls somewhere between 6 and 8. It is obviously more powerful than a CR 3 Dire Wolf and a CR 5 Dire Lion, but it seems to be as strong as or weaker than a CR 8 Dire Tiger.

So, does anyone here know how to judge CRs?

thats a toughy. i can easily see him as a cr 12 creature. a cr doesnt neceserally meen combat prowess. under certain conditions(such as darkness) he has the upper hand. without gear you can lose some effectiveness though but i dont think by that much. also if he is a 10th level brb shouldnt he have 2 attacks?

He has a +11 BAB, so he would have 3 attacks. But, you can't take multiple attacks with natural weapons, so that really limits the creature's damage capability.

And CR does entirely measure combat potential. Level Adjustments don't, but CR is combat potential, pure and simple. As it stands now, this character is a bit less powerful than a dire tiger, a CR 8 creature. Granted, this doesn't take into account some of the special attacks of this character (such as power attack and rage), but even with rage the character's HP, attack, and damage don't reach the dire tiger's.

could he use weapons in his hybrid form?... giving him x number of attacks with a weapon appropriate for a character of his level and a bite attack at highest base attack bonus -5?

that would help increase his CR toward 12

But the character isn't in his hybrid form, it is in its animal form. This is the were-creature's first transformation, and it will be stuck in animal form until dawn.

well treating it as an entirly new creature, using the guestimator I use to get the initial estimate for my Monster of the Week this guy has a cr of 9 (9.33-->)

I would suggest giving him some equipment that would be useful in either form (such as a magic amulet that still dangles around his neck or an ioun stone which keeps on whirling around his head) unless of course you want him to be more or less indistinguishable from a normal animal.

9 you say ... looks like he'll have to have some company to actually irritate the party.

This is actually one of the PCs. He's been captured and the party is coming to rescue him. This is when they find out what's up, because on one of the later rounds of the fight with him, dawn will come. The character should remain itemless, or else the item will fall into the player's hands.
