| vic11-21-05, 02:01 AM | Can Nightmares talk/communicate? Demons are from the Abyss, Devils from the Nine planes of Baator, Nightmares are from Grey wastes of Hades itself. But as Hades is now the home of the Blood War, the eternal battle with no quarter between the Demons and the Devils, the nightmares make their home between the nine planes of Baator, the abyss and the material plane. Would they understand Abyssal, Infernal and Draconic? They're stats show an Int 10+ has diplomacy , sense motive and is at intelligent as an average person, no language is listed and therefore it cannot be assumed it can talk. I mean its a suped up light warhorse basically. So do they speak telepathically? how do they communicate? Where does their Diplomacy skill get used? |
| cwslyclgh11-21-05, 02:05 AM | no language is listed and therefore it cannot be assumed it can talk.all creatures with int 3 or more are assumed to beable to talk unless noted other wise in thier description... by the book I believe that in the absense of any other evidence a creature is assumed to beable to communicate in common... while that works in most cases in the case of a nightmare I would probably house rule it to beable to communicate in both abyssal and infernal instead. |
| vic11-21-05, 02:17 AM | Got a reference for that? Int 3+ ? Somewhere I can look that up? |
| Shemeska the Marauder11-21-05, 02:32 AM | They likely can speak whatever languages the Night Hags who tend to breed them teach to them. I'd also allow them to at least understand yugoloth (if you have it as a seperate language, which it was prior to 3.x) since yugoloths are the native fiend race of the Gray Waste. |

| vic11-21-05, 02:50 AM | Actually, a thought, What about Ignan? Fire Based creatures speak it, and the nightmare is kinda fire based. I don't know, I know the rules don't say they speak a language, to me they 'suggest' they do. But something hard and fast which says they can communicate would be nice. Any book anywhere. Something to show the DM really. I need to communicate with one and want to know a method of doing that beyond telepathy. |
| vic11-21-05, 02:55 AM | MM (3.5) page 7 Excellent!! Well, I assume it Understands Common from that page. What about speaks/communicates itself ??? .... btw, thanks for the help guys. |
| vic11-23-05, 05:05 AM | What would be the best way I could have a nightmare communicate back to me? |
| scienceman4711-24-05, 04:45 AM | Although they are fiery, they are not from the Plane of fire. So they probably wont know ignan. As for communication, check and see their description. It should say something like "nightmares understand common, but do not speak it" or "nightmares understand and speak infernal and common". That is, it is usually clear on the subject. Check if it has supernatural communication abilities. And yes or no answers can be gotten with 1 clop 2 clop sorta thing. |
| vic11-24-05, 06:00 AM | The description doesn't list any ability to speak or understand any language at all. That said, how it has diplomacy ranks while using the 'clop' method of communication I just don't know. |
| DreadWizardDM11-24-05, 06:51 AM | Put some peanut butter in its gums and let it Mr Ed talk hehe. |
| savant_warlord1311-24-05, 08:59 AM | even if it can't talk, it would be able to do 'charades' to communicate, and can definitely understand some languages |
| templeton_algrith11-24-05, 09:14 AM | I would say no, though animal empathy and the like should work. (By the way, Napoleon was born on the island of Corsica, which is a French possession in the Mediterranean, not an Italian one.) |
