Can't think of appropriate monsters [Archive] - Wizards Community

So I'll be DMing an adventure some time in the future, and I'm trying to plan it out now. I've the general plotline worked out, but can't think of the monsters that would work for a certain part of it.

The situation is a school that's based on the university we all go to. It's been mostly abandoned for 500 years, which was when the temperature control for the region broke and the cold came in. Okay, backtrack: The school is up north, in the bloody-cold area. It was under the effect of a magic which kept the area around it the same climate as a warm-temperate zone. 500 years ago in our campaign, most of the magic vanished. This means that the school is now in a polar region, and very cold, and mostly abandoned.

There is one mostly-permanent resident in the school: a neutrally-aligned, intelligent sort-of-undead that has a tacit non-interference thing going with most of the monsters: they don't bug her, she doesn't bug them.

There's a tribe of people in the area, but they don't often go in the school.

Sorry to impose this on all of you, and if this is the wrong forum please direct me to the right one, but help!

Look in Frotburn. It should have some good ones for you. And I believe there is a template for undead in there that you can apply to some low CR undead and make them tundra-y.

I'm thinking there's a few categories of things that could be met in here:
- more-or-less permanent residents (includes the undead I mentioned, and monsters that prefer staying in the sheltered area)
- transients (randomly walked in, might or might not be aggressive)

How about a Crypt Thing? I believe they're neutral, they're quite intelligent and they are mostly guardians of particular tombs. I was thinking of actually one put on an ancient ship, long caught on immovable ice, guarding some treasure and remains left there.

Also perhaps a small white dragon might work, just dangerous enough to not want to take on, and in its cunning it avoids antagonizing larger organized groups like say the tribe or the school.

Personally I'm fond of Frost Giants and their various followers. I believe there are some new classes for them in the book. I like to make them rather more like the norse ones and have spellcasters as leaders among them. Perhaps at certain times of the year they are likely to stage raids.
