| Newbisan01-30-04, 11:41 PM | OK, say I'm starting a 2nd level Paladin Aasimar, which has a Level Adjustment of +1. Am I correct in assuming it's an ECL of 3? The MM says you add the LA to its total hit die, including class levels. The stats for the Asimar listed have it as a 1st level warrior - I just substitute 2 paladin levels for that, add the LA, and come up with 3, right? OK, it get trickier. Does the paladin only have 2 HD, or 3? In other words, does it get a HD for the LA and 2 for the paladin levels, or only the 2 paladin HD? (and if it DOES get the 1 HD due to the LA, is that considered a racial hit die for being Aasimar?) Even trickier. If the paladin is an ECL 3, does that mean it gets the additional feat for being a 3rd level character, or do you only factor in the paladin levels? Finally, (I think I have this 'un) assuming the Aasimar Pal2 is an ECL 3, that means it gains the next paladin level (3) at 6,000xp, the equivalent of 4th level for a regular pc. Right? I'm asking because I'm DMing, and have informed the players they can either start at 3rd level with a core race or be a LA +1 race (Aasimar, for example) and start at level 2. This would be a balanced group, yes? Lol gee only 8 questions there. Sorry folks, just want to make sure I do it fairly. :D |
| Roka_Shotar01-30-04, 11:44 PM | I just know that lvl. adjustment means to gain one more level, you need to have experiance of the lvl you are going to + your lvl adjustment, to balance out powerful character races. It does not add any HD or ECL. Only changes EXP. |
| Newbisan01-30-04, 11:55 PM | OK, so the LA does not add a HD. So, what about this - does the Aasimar Pal2 have 1 racial hd, 2 Paladin HD, and LA of +1, making it an ECL 4? Jees I'm so confused about this. |
| Roka_Shotar01-30-04, 11:57 PM | No. HE has 1 racial Hit Die 2 Paladin hit die. He needs to have the experiance to get to lvl 4 so he could be a lvl 3 paladin. |
| Roka_Shotar01-31-04, 12:01 AM | An ECL of 3. The lvl. adjustment ONLY changes XP needs to level up. |
| Primus, the One and Prime01-31-04, 12:18 AM | The Aasimar Paladin has no Racial Hit Die. He starts off with one level of Warrior. That's where the first HD in the MM comes from. When you make a character out of a 1 HD monster you replace that 1 HD (Which is just an NPC class such s Warrior) with your levels. Your Aasimar Paladin will have 2 levels of Paladin. So, 1 Feat, Paladin powers up to level 2, and level 2 Paladin Saves. But in terms of experience and challenge he will be treated as a 3rd level character. |
| Roka_Shotar01-31-04, 12:19 AM | Ooops! My mistake! Thanks. I only have one year of experiance. And that was all with half elves and humans. Not much on the Planar Races. |
| Newbisan01-31-04, 12:21 AM | OK I think I gotcha. So bascially in every way he's a level 2 character. Only considered level 3 in regards to experience, challenge rating, and I believe starting wealth, correct? Simple as that? |
| Roka_Shotar01-31-04, 12:23 AM | Dont think so w/ wealth. But yeah. Dont you just hate Lvl adjustments? And the Mind Flare has one of +7! Crazy! |
| Primus, the One and Prime01-31-04, 12:23 AM | Simple as that! Most level related benefits (Feats, added ability points, etc.) are really HD related. When he has 3 HD he'll get a feat. When he has 4 HD he'll get an ability point. |
| Primus, the One and Prime01-31-04, 12:24 AM | Yea, if you don't let Wealth be equal to a creature of that ECL the character will be underwealthed compared to his fellows. ECL 3 gets Level 3 treasure. |
| strenoth01-31-04, 02:36 AM | primus is correct. :) |
| Boondoggle01-31-04, 03:06 AM | Someone really needs to write a clear, concise, simple and thorough primer on this stuff in a sticky thread... I would offer, but I'm neither clear or concise when I write... |
| Contrast01-31-04, 10:28 AM | *disapointed sigh* I would tell you to buy The Savage Species, but during a recent attempt to make a 3.5 player race I came to realize that it is woefully outdate. |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast01-31-04, 10:59 AM | The trouble with Savage Species is that it is neither 3.0 or 3.5, more along the lines of 3.25 or something. SO if you dont mind having to change rules in the book a little, it will give you a lot of insight into LA and all that. |
