Last night, in out Thursday night game, the barbarian's cohort was Strength drained by a band of shadows. Then the cleric finally turned the shadows, but they had a dead cohort and my die roll showed that it would arise as a shadow in 4 rounds.

Is there anything the adventurers might do to keep a PC/NPC from arising as a shadow?

The only thing I can come up with off the top of my head is to destroy the body, but that also rules out resurrection or raise dead. Maybe a carefully worded wish can work, but it will depend on your dm.

Erm... bathe the body in holy water, or have it blessed by a Cleric?

I believe the spell is called Spawn Screen, and I know it's in Libris Mortis. Of course, I'm at work, so I can't verify the name--but I'm pretty sure that's right.

Many monster entries also indicate certain situations that can prevent a body from rising again as spawn, but that varies from monster to monster. Some require you to cast protection from evil on the corpse between the time it is slain and the time it rises again, others call for a break enchantment spell. Really it's a matter of looking up the ability, but if you're not allowed to look at the DM's resources, ask him if there is an appropriate check (which is usually Knowledge (religion) for undead) one can make to determine how to prevent their former ally from being brought back into foul unlife.
