As seen in my signature, Skreebo the Kobold Enchanter has just attained the first of his many goals: becoming a Mage of the Arcane Order. We are playing through Speaker in Dreams in a friend's campaign. We have been exchanging blows with the Blessed and his Wystes. We stormed his bookshop, and Skreebo was sent in to scout it out invisibly. I found a gibbering mouther in the closet. Now, we all know what eccentric bastards those kobolds are, and Skreebo persuaded the party to let it live so he could keep it for study. I have a clear idea of how to capture it. Have our cleric of Pelor cast silence and put up a caged "hall" from the closet door to the back door and into a wagon. But how do I keep it in the lab I will set up? And how can I transfer it from place to place when we travel? Keep in mind I have not chosen my second 3rd level spell for leveling up, and I do have access to Spellpool I. My prohibited schools are Divination and Necromancy.

Any other suggestions on how to capture it would be appreciated as well.

Is it possible to Petrify something and then dispel the petrification?
I think petrify is instantaneous, though. So, nevermind.

I think a creature that is turned to stone can be restored with a simple break enchantment.

It is rather hard to capture alive, and harder to transport, a mouther due to its amorphous shape. My best suggestion is to use baleful polymorph to turn it into a rabbit (or something), transport it, and cast dispel magic when you get to your destination (and have a cage that can hold it, which would probably have to be some sort of large, magically reinforced, glass box).

Wait, you aren't high enough level to cast baleful polymorph... well, you got me.

Flesh to stone, stone to flesh is what the above posters were trying to say.

Charm monster might work. With only 3rd level spells, though, there is no easy way.

You could also try using some spell to boost your diplomacy and then try to influence its attitude. You could also try to use charm person to make it friendly towards you and then cast hypnotism on it (makes subject obey a command as if they were 2 levels friendlier) to get a fanatic reaction so it would put itself into a cage and tell you the best way to seal it up. Are you using 3.5 or 3.0, because the 3.5 one has that acidic spittle which might burn through some containers.

I think I'll have the cleric cast silence on a rock, I'll cast invisibility, and then I'll buy or make a scroll of polymorph other, from which I'll turn it into a rabbit. I'll put the rock next to the door, open it with knock, and BOOM! My own gibbering rabbit.

Too bad I'm too low for stone to flesh. Woulda been funny,

Yeah?

Once you've petrified the mouther, HOW DO YOU INTEND TO LIFT IT??

It already weighs 200 lbs as flesh; turning it into stone would give you a half-ton rock to transport.

Didn't think of that, huh?

Or maybe a first level spell like Tenser's Floating Disk. If I had flesh to stone, of course.
