| Juliomartell10-16-05, 09:51 PM | Name: Carbuncle Size: Tiny weight: 5 Physical description: http://www.rpgeternity.altervista.org/GF%20FF8/Carbuncle_ff8.jpg This picture is a relation to what a carbunkle would basically look like. Various carbuncle of different types are of different fur color, ear size, feet length, or even gem color. Some may look more rabbit, others may look more feline, and a few may even have a different attribute about it than others. There is even a super rare case carbunkles are the size of riding animals. type: Magical beast HD:1d8 ability score: Str:5 Dex:23 con:15 Int:19 Wis:16 Cha:24 attack:bite 1d3, tail 1d2 fullattack: subtype:guardienal AC:18(+2natural+6dex) specialAttacks: concussion blast, cloud mind, psionic flight, telekinetic force, telekinetic thrust, telekinetic maneuver, psionics teleport, read thoughts, mindlink specialquality: Uncanny Dodge, weapon finese, combat reflexes, combat casting, speed 20-30ft well this is all i have so far. Don't have no psionics book so I dun know what her usual abilities would be. |
| Callahan10-16-05, 10:14 PM | well... where to start? ok: Slam can't be used if the creature has other natural attacks. Slam is basicly there to substitute for the lack of any other attack. Also Slam's damage is size related. To have a Slam of 1 you'd have to be a Fine size. 8 is not a hit die. 1d10 is. your ability score stat are basicly insane for a creature with 1 hd. there is no such thing as a "guardian" subtype. |
| Juliomartell10-17-05, 04:38 PM | anyone else got suggestions? |
| The Vorpal Tribble10-17-05, 04:59 PM | Aye, you need to learn the basics on how to make a monster ;) For starters, you need to make sure all this is filled out: Joe Creature <Size and Type> Hit Dice: Initiative: Speed: Armo rClass: BAB/Grapple: Attack: Full attack: Space/Reach: Special Attacks: Special Qualities: Saves: Fort +, Ref +, Will + Abilities: Str , Dex , Con , Int , Wis , Cha Skills: Feats: Environment: Organization: Challenge Rating: Treasure: Alignment: Advancement: Level Adjustment: Combat: -=-=-=-=- If you like we can go over this bit and show you what needs done. |

| OrcDoubleSword10-17-05, 07:12 PM | Just to be clear, this is the Carbunkle from all those Final Fantasy games, correct? Well, if you're trying to stay faithful to the game, you may wanna give Carbunkles a constant Spell Turning (which is overkill, with special qualities like that) and the equivalent of a Protect spell...a Mage Armor, maybe? But yes, for a 1-hit die monster, those abilities are pretty insane...but hey, so are the stats for a level 1 paragon. |
| Callahan10-18-05, 12:21 AM | Wrong. Reread the MM. And the damage values in the back are damned guidelines. Give me the damned quote from the SRD then! |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht10-18-05, 02:16 AM | Give me the damned quote from the SRD then! The one making the positive assertion must provide evidence. You made the positive assertion. Ergo, you must provide the quote. |
| Callahan10-18-05, 02:21 AM | The one making the positive assertion must provide evidence. You made the positive assertion. Ergo, you must provide the quote. There is nothing in the SRD that validates your point. In the MM however there a several instances that validate mine. EG: Vampire, Zombie and other templates or creatures with a slam attack. Please provide a valid counter point. |
| Callahan10-18-05, 02:34 AM | almost forgot to add: At this time your creature has a really high CR. Somehting like... oh I don't know CR 9 due to it's huge base ability score and onslaught of special abilities and feats. however it's only got one HD. which means that a level 1 fighter can kill it with a single stray arrow. Now I suggest something like 6 or 7 HD, or tone down the ability scores and psionics. Also, you need this badly: Magical Beast Type: Magical beasts are similar to animals but can have Intelligence scores higher than 2. Magical beasts usually have supernatural or extraordinary abilities, but sometimes are merely bizarre in appearance or habits. Features: A magical beast has the following features. —10-sided Hit Dice. —Base attack bonus equal to total Hit Dice (as fighter). —Good Fortitude and Reflex saves. —Skill points equal to (2 + Int modifier, minimum 1) per Hit Die, with quadruple skill points for the first Hit Die. Traits: A magical beast possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry). —Darkvision out to 60 feet and low-light vision. —Proficient with its natural weapons only. —Proficient with no armor. —Magical beasts eat, sleep, and breathe. |

EG: Vampire, Zombie and other templates or creatures with a slam attack. Please provide a valid counter point. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Unless there is a rule that specifically states that a slam attack can only be used on its own, the default assumption is that a slam attack doesn't always have to be used on its own. |
| mythSSK10-18-05, 05:44 AM | A slam attack is a type of natural attack, just as a claw, a bite, or a gore. Unarmed strike is what's used if the creature has no form of natural weapon. Perhaps Callahan is just getting the two confused? His own example points this out. He refers to the vampire entry, which states that a vampire gains a slam attack if it did not already have one. That contradicts Callahan's statement of a slam being used as a default when there are no other attack forms available... if it was the default, why would the vampire template grant it? Everything would already have it. There are examples of monsters with a slam attack and other natural weapons, and using them all in a full attack. I remember seeing them, somewhere. I'd have to go looking to find them, and I'm unwilling to waste time trying unless Callahan does not realise his mistake, which he may easily, given that I tried to explain it rather than just saying "Wrong." You are right, Raymond_Luxury_Yacht, but perhaps you could have taken a second to explain why, rather then just stating that someone is wrong. You came off rather hostile in your first post - hostility that was unprovoked, and unnecessary. Callahan reacted accordingly. |

I have got to stop posting late at night. |
| SinisterSeraph10-18-05, 09:45 AM | There is already a carbuncle in the Tome of Horrors, As 99% of Final Fantasy and such games are taken either from DnD directly, or from the same source material that DnD referenced. Just in case anyone wanted to know. |
| mythSSK10-18-05, 05:57 PM | Yeah, I realized that recently. I have got to stop posting late at night. :) It's all good. We all get a bit crabby when we're tired. There is already a carbuncle in the Tome of Horrors, As 99% of Final Fantasy and such games are taken either from DnD directly, or from the same source material that DnD referenced. I know that much of the mythologies that are drawn on in the creation of Final Fantasy games are also sources for D&D, but I'm curious to know what Final Fantasy takes directly from D&D as I hadn't noticed anything myself. Would you care to share, Seraph? --- @Juliomartell: My advice for you is to use the layout The Vorpal Tribble has given you (as it is identical to the MM and SRD format) and if you need help with any of the areas, just ask. Remember that the 'Magical Beast' type is a defined type in D&D, and consult your MM or the SRD to figure out exactly what benefits (such as HD size, BAB, saves, and skill points) are gained from it. |
