| darkthought06-25-04, 08:32 PM | I'm currently evilfying a carrion Crawler. I'm raising it from 3HD to 9HD, and that means 2 new feats for it. I was gonna give it improved grab and swallow whole. How would I figure out the damage on the swallow whole? It's a huge creature now, and it's bite would do 1d6+3 dmg. And it's also a CR 5 creature now as well, if that helps. |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht06-25-04, 10:01 PM | Improved Grap and Swallow Whole aren't feats. They're Extraordinary abilities. |
| shadowflamedancer06-26-04, 12:19 AM | it true that there not feats, but I can easily see a very large carrion crawler eating people(like alex over there. Bye alex!) I'm not sure about damage, but now you make me want to make a large carrion crawler. Mabey I'll just try to train the one that ate Alex. Last I checked I had +37 to hande animal checks with other worldly creatures. (wanders off to find the carion crawler) Don't forget to incease it's size to somthing appropriate for PC eating. |

Thanks for the helpful comments! /sarcasm off it true that there not feats, but I can easily see a very large carrion crawler eating people(like alex over there. Bye alex!) Last I checked I had +37 to hande animal checks with other worldly creatures. (wanders off to find the carion crawler) Perhaps Snatch would work for the whole grab thing? And I can give it the Swallow Whole ability in place of a feat to keep it from becoming too overkill. Probably gonna throw the fiendish creature template on it too, just for kicks. The creature is up to huge size now. One above large. Big enough I think to swallow someone whole. A T-Rex is a huge creature, so size isn't a problem. So back to my original question, any idea on the damage for the swallow whole? Any suggestions on how to scale something like this? |
| Ogre4Hire06-26-04, 12:04 PM | Just say that carrion crawlers that grow to huge size gain the Improved Grab and Swallow Whole abilities. Combined with the more powerful paralysis that a larger one will have, that makes fow one nasty critter. |
| shadowflamedancer06-26-04, 01:49 PM | Look at another creature with swallow whole(ex: tarresque), and the reduce the damage by size. Collasal ---> Gargantuan ---> Huge. If that is unreasonable, i would say {bite damage x2}, and then add 10 points of acid. Purple worm might be a good sample. From the 3.5 SRD: PURPLE WORM Gargantuan Magical Beast Hit Dice: 16d10+112 (200 hp) Initiative: -2 Speed: 20 ft. (4 squares), burrow 20 ft., swim 10 ft. Armor Class: 19 (-4 size, -2 Dex, +15 natural), touch 4, flat-footed 19 Base Attack/Grapple: +16/+40 Attack: Bite +25 melee (2d8+12) Full Attack: Bite +25 melee (2d8+12) and sting +20 melee (2d6+6 plus poison) Space/Reach: 20 ft./15ft. Special Attacks: Improved grab, swallow whole, poison Special Qualities: Tremorsense 60 ft. Saves: Fort +17, Ref +8, Will +4 Abilities: Str 35, Dex 6, Con 25, Int 1, Wis 8, Cha 8 Skills: Listen +18, Swim +20 Feats: Awesome Blow, Cleave, Improved Bull Rush, Power Attack, Weapon Focus (bite), Weapon Focus (sting) Environment: Underground Organization: Solitary Challenge Rating: 12 Treasure: No coins, 50% goods (stone only), no items Alignment: Always neutral Advancement: 16-32 HD (Gargantuan); 33-48 HD (Colossal) Level Adjustment: - The body of a mature purple worm is 5 feet in diameter and 80 feet long, weighing about 40,000 pounds. The creature has a poisonous stinger in its tail. COMBAT In battle, a purple worm forms into a coil 20 feet in diameter, biting and stinging anything within reach. Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, a purple worm must hit with its bite attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins the grapple check, it establishes a hold and can attempt to swallow the foe the following round. Poison (Ex): Injury, Fortitude DC 25, initial damage 1d6 Str, secondary damage 2d6 Str. The save DC is Constitution-based. Swallow Whole (Ex): A purple worm can try to swallow a grabbed opponent of a smaller size than itself by making a successful grapple check. Once inside, the opponent takes 2d8+12 points of crushing damage plus 8 points of acid damage per round from the worm’s gizzard. A swallowed creature can cut its way out by using a light slashing or piercing weapon to deal 25 points of damage to the gizzard (AC 17). Once the creature exits, muscular action closes the hole; another swallowed opponent must cut its own way out. A Gargantuan worm’s interior can hold 2 Large, 8 Medium, 32 Small, 128 Tiny, or 512 Diminutive or smaller opponents. Skills: A purple worm has a +8 racial bonus on any Swim check to perform some special action or avoid a hazard. It can always choose to take 10 on a Swim check, even if distracted or endangered. It can use the run action while swimming, provided it swims in a straight line. From the looks of that swallow whole damage for a huge creature would be abour 2d6 (reduced from 2d8) bludgoning damage every round, and 1/2 HD in Acid. I'm not sure how to figure out the AC of the gizzard or the amount of damage that must be dealt to it. Youll just have to wing it on those. Good Luck! :D |
| darkthought06-26-04, 03:58 PM | The AC is 10+1/2 the creatures natural armor. Thanks for the information. I may just use snatch for it tho, still pretty nasty. Tenticle 1 picks up a guy, paralyzes him, puts in mouth for automatic bite damage each round. Tenticle 2 picks a guy up, paralyzes him, and heaves him 1d6x10 feet for damage. Tenticle 3-8 do the same. Not to mention the Fiendish traits I gave it. BWAHAHAHHAA. edit: I'm a moron and hit the wrong button. LOL |
