Caryatid Column vs Flour [Archive] - Wizards Community

My question is simple. Can a construct be blinded by powders? (i.e. - throwing a sack of flour at one to blind it)

Simple enough. ^_^

So, no, there are no rules for blinding a construct (or anything) with powders.

Even if there were, I'd say no to blinding a Cantrid Colum. Does that thing even have eyes? Even if it did, the powder would not stick on to them.

10-25-05, 01:17 AM Personally, I tend to use powder clouds like fog: as concealment. They might stay for, say... 1 or 2 rounds (granting 20% concealment or so...), then dissipate.

An other approach could be to ask for a Reflex save (DC 15, let's say)allowing the character to close his/her eyes in time to avoid the powder. Failure would blind him/her for 1d4 rounds...

There are several alchemical items dealing with "the disabling of the eyes" you could use as inspiration. :)

However, concerning the caryatid column, I wouldn't allow for it to be blinded, since it effectively is an animated object, and doesn't really see with its eyes.
(I know it's a construct from Fiend Folio, by the way, but it really acts just like an animated statue supposed to hold the ceiling...)

10-25-05, 02:17 AM A creature always uses a form of sight to detect the world around it unless otherwise noted. This includes all forms of constructs and undead (which do not necessarially even have eyes.) They have no special means of detection unless specified in their monster entry.

Flour, yes, if used in such a fashion would create (from a single sack) a 5 foot square of concealment (10% or maybe 20% if you feel generous) that would last for 2 rounds, following the effects of gasses for dispersal in winds.

A caryatid column would not be immune to the miss chance created from thrown flour, but it would also not be Blinded by having the flour thrown at it...
