Ok so I have some questions about the Dancing Chains (SU) ability.

So any smart (even with int 6) would carry 4 chains with him in addition to the ones attached to him.

1) What are the dancing chains considered to be? Magical attended objects?
2) Can the chains grapple, trip, disarm opponents? (it says they attack as the devil itself)
3) If you tell them to attack someone, do you have to spend a standard action every round to have them continue to attack the same person or will they just do the last thing you told them and leave you free to do other stuff?
4) Do the chains threaten any squares and how big are they considered to be?

I just had this cool idea about the chains having a hook in one end and then having them wrap around someone and locking themselves up.

Well....

1) Do you mean while he's controlling them? Attended items, yeah. Only Magical if they started off magical.

2) The chains attack as the Kyton does. That means, if HE can trip, grapple, etc, then so can the chain. With the normal bonuses for Spiked Chains.

3) According to the SRD on Kytons: . In addition, a chain devil can increase these chains’ length by up to 15 feet and cause them to sprout razor-edged barbs.
So, I'd say the chains are 15' longer than they were to begin with. However the devil can only control the chains out to a distance of 20', so if it's MUCH longer, there'll just be some dangling chain at the end of his control area. A chain would threaten any square it could reach. Consider them starting comming FROM him. A chain (spiked) normally threatens 10'. He can increase the length... I'd say they threaten the entire 20' he can control them to.
What do you mean by 'how big?' Size category? He's Medium sized himself, so any weapon he wields will be that size also (he doesn't have Monkey Grip, I checked).

As far as your hook idea... the chains "sprout barbs" as described. In the immortal words of Mike Myers, "That'll do, donkey, that'll do."

For 4. I meant the dancing chains not the ones atached to the Kyton. What about 3)?

1) i would say the chains are a body part while attached, since they act as such.
2) refer to #1, since they are body parts.
3) again, they're body parts, do you tell your legs to keep walking?
4) depending on how the chains are arranged, this will differ. if they are all in one square, they take up more space than being spread out. i would count the kyton as being in all squares its chains occupy (with the exception that creatures can pas the square)
just my opinion

Sorry, my eyes unfocussed last time. I missed 3. Heh.

No, they will not just keep attacking. The creature is controlling the chains. The chains are not animated entities waiting for instructions. For a visual, consider Telekinesis. The Kyton is using TK to move the chains. Thus, if he fails to give it an 'order' this round (ie, fails to remember to move this chain), it just sits there like a chain.

As far as the distance question, I WAS talking about the ones he controls, not the ones attatched to him. I assumed ALL of your questions were about the extra 4 he can control above and beyond those that are a part of him.

...and then toss in their chain golems from MM2 to make a nasty killer combo, and you can make your players cry. :weep:

Until the PCs summon a horde of Celestial Rust Monsters and make the Chain Devil scream. :OMG!
