Hey all, I'm about to start up a new game for some low-mid powered characters (ECL 5), and would like some help in creating a suitible wave of destruction for them. I was thinking the Clockwork horrors from MMI, though the ones from the book are barely usable at their CR without wiping out the party. I guess what I'm asking for is the lower metal varieties (copper, iron, etc.) and if anyone else has created them. The lower versions barely need to be sentient, just enough so they'll know how to funtionally strip mine an area in record time. Any suggestions or stat blocks would be appreciated.

Actually, if you look closer at the Clockwork Horrors, you'll see they're just fine for their CR. They're what I call "puzzle monsters"; like the Hydra, if you simply try to bash them, you'll die horribly, but if you're smart and use tactics, the fight becomes considerably easier.

Yes, some of the more powerful Clockwork Horrors have powerful spell-like abilities, but as Constructs, they have no Constitution score, and no ranks in Concentration. (Undead use Charisma for Concentration, but Constructs don't). That means that the dreaded disjunction of an Adamantine Horror is completely negated by a lowly Tanglefoot bag, or a grapple, and it's difficult to near-impossible for Clockwork Horrors to cast defensively with their SLAs.

If the PCs let them stay at range, never close, and don't disrupt the SLAs, they'll die, and horribly. But if the PCs take away their SLAs, then things become quite managable.
