I can generally estimate a monster's CR up to 20 or so, but after that any creature with incredible ammounts of hit points totally throw off the calculations.

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for figuring out an epic creatures challenge rating?

Test it on a fabricated party of your target CR. If at epic levels assume the characters have consulted gods, researched in ancient libraries, and used bardic knowledge to know every aspect of the creature and tried to alter the enviroment to suit their attack plans. Then play out the combat in one of two ways; either have everyoine take a 10 on everything, or roll it all out. If the monster loses, but kills at least one member of the party the CR is on target. Any other result TPK, or a PC flawless victory or otherwise means adjust the CR. Keep in mind the PCs should have full buffs, full spells, and full HP.

Well, yes, testing it out against players would work reguardless of epic or normal level, however, you kinda of need a rough estimate before you test it in such a fashion or you might hae to test it dozens of times to get it right as it might be a CR 25 or a CR 50.
