Challenge Rating/Encounter levels for 1+ monsters [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-31-05, 12:13 PM I dont fully understand how two (or more) monsters get certain challenge ratings- the Dungeon Master's guide wasnt much help- it said you can increase the CR by 2 for each monster....but the example showed something different. help....

08-31-05, 12:55 PM Let's say you have a CR5 creature.

1 of them has EL5.
2 of them have EL5+2 = EL7.
4 of them have EL7+2 = EL9.
8 of them have EL9+2 = EL11.

And so on. However, large amounts of low-CR creatures will normally not follow this basic rule, as they'd be no challenge for high-level characters even in multiples. In such cases, using the Swarm rules would be more appropriate.
