It's skin has a thick gray sort of texture to it, and it's almost bulbous in nature. It's head is rather large compared to what you would expect from a smaller body. It's bald and has no facial hair or eyebrows. It's eyes are two little slits that glow a pure white fire. It's mouth gapes open, and inside all that can be seen is a burning white fire. Sprouting from it's back are two bat wings that stretch about his body length from his side per wing. These spells are cast as a 5th level sorcerer. There DC is equal to 11 + the spell level. The chan'tierel are a group of cave-dwelling creatures that dwelled peacefully on the plane of Hades, scavenging off dead creatures, and living off the fungus growing in the caves. That was until the mindflayers came. According to chan'tierel legend a powerful mindflayer known by the name of Kan'Tuk, arrived. Nobody is sure why he was traveling in the plane of Hades, and nobody got a chance to ask as he died five years after his rule. None-the-less, Kan'Tuk came and he got wind of the cave-dwelling tribal chan'tierel. He saw them as potentional slaves so he brought in his current mind thralls and there respective minions and conquered the people. Over three years he built a powerful hierarchy, with him respectively at the top. He trained, what he considered his slave-people, to become ruthless and have hatred towards those who Kan'Tuk deemed an opponent (which was many of the intelligent races on the material plane). On the fourth year of his reign, Kan'Tuk brought in someone he referred to as his nephew. It was a younger mindflayer who seemingly acted as Kan'Tuk's advisor and general. After three months of the younger mindflayers dwelling Kan'Tuk named the mindflayer, who's name was then revealed as Haireen, as his second in command. After a year of succesful raids to the material plane, and expanding the small chan'tierel empire, Kan'Tuk mysteriously disappeared. Three days later, it was revealed that his body was found dead in the sewers. At that point Haireen took over command. Over the years that took place since the death of Kan'Tuk, and the beginning of the reign of Haireen, Haireen has sprouted many spawn mindflayers, whom he has designated command over various chan'tierel areas. However, Haireen has never declared a second, as he has always felt that was a foolish thing to do. Strategies and Tactics When engaged in combat the chan'tierel fight ruthlessly, stabbing their opponents over and over again. The chan'tierel also prefer to sneak up on their opponents, catching them of guard, delivering a sneak attack on their opponents, hopefully giving the chan'tierel an advantage. There spells are also used, but considering their limited use, they are using sparingly. Ecology The chan'tierel are cave dwelling people, so they have learned to live off the bare necessities of the fungus. They are also excellent at moving silently through the darkened caverns. This makes them excellent hunters. Before the mindflayers came they lived almost completely off the cave-fungus. Since the mindflayers came, various foods such as meats and vegetables have been imported, or stolen. Ecology The chan'tierel were not originally a war dwelling race. They were a peaceful scavenging race. This all changed when the mindflayers came. It was almost as if the darkness touched there heart. The chan'tierel were almost instantly converted into ruthless killers, striving for individual power. |
| thasis09-11-06, 06:31 PM | Bump? Is this realy that good? Well I think it is... but I'm biased :D |
| thasis09-12-06, 06:03 PM | As this STILL has no responses, and it's been another 24 hours (or should I say 23:32) so here's another bump. |
| thasis09-13-06, 07:03 PM | Well I've come to a conclusion, this is a perfect monster and nobody has any critisism what so ever. I'm a genius *puts on genius cap and waits for the first critisism to come and break his wall of idiotic geniusness* |
| dok09-13-06, 08:20 PM | < sigh > OK, fine, I'll give it a once-over Attack: Dagger +6 melee (1d4+1/19-20x2) Full Attack: x4 Daggers +4 melee (1d4+1/19-20x2) and Bite +4 melee (1d6+1) And we get our first two errors. The Attack line is calculated correctly, but the Full Attack line has two errors. First, this creature does not have the Multiweapon Fighting feat (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsterFeats.htm#multiweaponFighting), so when it attacks with all four daggers, its primary attack suffers a -6 penalty, and all it's off-hand attacks suffer a -10 penalty. (there is no notation in MWF to suggest that light weapons reduce the penalty, though it is a fair house rule to say they do, in which case the penalty is -4/-8.) Also, this creature does not have the Multiattack feat, so it's Secondary Natural Weapon should have a -5 penalty. So, either this creature needs two Bonus feats added, or the Attack line should be Full Attack: Dagger +2 (1d4+1, 19-20/x2) and 3 daggers -2 (1d4+1, 19-20/x2) and Bite +1 melee (1d6+1) (using the 'light weapon reduction' rule) Special Qualities: Darkvision 120ft, DR5/Silver and Good Creatures with a CR of 4 shouldn't have "and" DR. As a rule of thumb, creatures below CR 7 probably should have "or" DR up to 10, or "alignment OR material" DR up to 5. Skills: Concentration +12, Craft (Weaponsmith) +7, Escape Artist +10, Handle Animal +9, Hide +10, Listen +10, Move Silently +10 Small creatures recieve a +4 size bonus to Hide. Overall, I really don't feel one way or the other about the race. It's SLAs are a mixed bunch, and don't contribute much to either the creature's tactics, or its flavor. I don't see why these creatures are Outsiders. Yes, they live in Hades, but not everything on the Outer Planes is an Outsider. They seem more like Monstrous Humanoids than Outsiders. For that matter, I don't see how or why these creatures have any connection to Hades; they could just as easily be from another Prime Material plane. Likewise, they have the [evil] subtype, except that you go out of your way to say that pre-Mind Flayer, they weren't evil, and your mythology/history makes it sound like they were recently conquered, i.e. less than two generations of Mindflayers. The backstory also doesn't quite make sense. Reading the creature's description, I don't see anything that suggests why Mindflayers would want this creature as a slave. They're not exceptionally strong or powerful, they actually have quite strong wills, they're too small to use as mounts and with a high flight speed, escaping from a slaver would be easy enough; I just don't see anything that makes these creatures worth all the trouble of enslaving them. |
| thasis09-15-06, 11:56 AM | Mmm... going off to make the corrections. As for the SLA... I can kinnda see your point on that. I'll do a bit of thinking of maybe more oriented abilities. As for the [Evil] subtype, combined with the evil nature of Hades, and their quick and easy succumbing to the dark-side of their nature, they became warped and evil, hence the [Evil] subtype. As for Mindflayers... why would they want to capture many of the races? Why would they want to enslave humanoids? These creatures are obviously stronger then many of the humanoid races in the PHB. Why not conquer them if they are so easily swayed. Also, I never gave specific dates. Yes, the first Mindflayer died fast, but I never gave how long the current Mindflayer had been ruling. As far as I've always run it (and as far as I know) Mindflayers don't realy age, so there's no telling how long he's had control. |
