When I advance a monster by hit dice for which I have added a template that changes it's type, do I change the hit die type in accord with the new type. For example, I want to advance a fiendish dire rat. The fiendish dire rat is a magical beast type with 1d8+1. When magical beasts advance they gain 1d10. As I read the rules, if I were to advance it one hit die, the advanced fiendish dire rat should have 1d8 plus 1d10 + 2. Is this correct?

The template should have information as to just how the HD is changed.

In the case of the fiendish template, only its type changes. You still continue using the original HD it had(animal, IIRC), which are d8s.
