Cheap Constructs [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-10-08, 11:24 PM My wizard just got a keep from a deck of many things, and would like to make some constructs to serve as soldiers. Warforged would seem to be ideal, but I don't think you can build them with Craft Construct. Does anyone know of any cheap constructs?

Yep, probably the cheapest. And there are a bunch of varieties in the Eberron Campaign Setting Guide (je pense...)

There are feats in the Eberron Campaign Setting, and a PrC in complete Arcane(if you are a gnome) that lets you build things at well below cost. Warforged are not available by the Craft Construct feat. What monster books do you have available?

Other than that, it will depend mostly on what monster books you have.

I don't remember which of these are craftable and which aren't, but right now I know there's:

Expeditious Messenger (Eberron)
Dedicated Wright (Eberron)
Furtive Filcher (Eberron again!)
Clockroach (MM4)
Iron Defender (Eberron once again!)
Homunculus (MM)
Iron Cobra (Fiend Folio)
Clockwork Pony and Stallion (MM4)
Various Golems (Various MMs)
-The cheapest golem off the top of my head might be the stained glass golem from MM2
Shield Gaurdian (MM)
Runic Gaurdian (MM2)
Nimblewright (MM2)
Bronze Serpent (MM2)
Wicker Man (Fiend Folio)

Those should be in rough CR order, going from small on up. It seems as if every splatbook introduces a new golem (tombstone golem in Libris Mortis, coral golem in Stormwrack, ice golem in Frostburn, etc), and there's also been a number of constructs here and there in various Dragon and Dungeon magazines.

Don't forget the Artificer in the same book.

Also, the Dread Guard from the MM2 is a good choice. I am about to start rolling them out myself once my party finishes clearing out our own castle.

In the MM2 it claims they cost 40,000gp each, but if you download the official 3.5 update on this site + the official errata also on this site it changes the price and cost. It now costs 2500gp + the price of a MW (MW required) heavy type armor + (Optional) MW (again MW required) shield + a weapon of the same size type as the armor or one size larger (MW not required for weapon) + 178xp.

Basically, I am currently begging the party to have any MW heavy armor, MW shields, and mundane weapons we come by. No one is taking my castle!:D

Issue # 341 seems to have constructs as its theme. It's got a construct on the cover, a half-dozen golems of CR 5 or less, new warforged components, animated object-style magic items, construct familiars for wizards and even the Ecology article is about Inevitables! Lots of tickety-tock goodness.

Oh, and Baphomet the demon prince.
