| yoritomoshomey06-07-05, 04:46 PM | Hello, This is my first attempt to put a template on a monster. Let me know if I am correct or not: Zombie Bugbear: CR 2; Medium-size Undead; HD 7d12+3; hp 42; Init +0 (Dex); Spd 30 ft.; AC 18, touch 15, flat-footed 18; Base Attack +3; Grapple +6; Atk +6 melee (1d8+3, morning star; 1d6+3, slam) or +3 ranged (1d6+3, javelin); SQ may take only partial actions in any given round, undead immunities; AL NE; SV Fort +2, Ref +2, Will +5; Str 17, Dex 10, Con -, Int -, Wis 10, Cha 1. Feats: Toughness Special Qualities:Undead Immunities: Immune to mind influencing effects, poison, sleep, paralyzation, stunning, disease, and necromantic effects; not subject to critical hits, sneak attacks, ability damage, ability drain, or energy drain; immune to anything requiring a Fort save unless that effect can also affect objects. Possessions: Morning Star, Leather Armor, Light Wooden Shield, Javelin Thanks, Dave |
| Colmarr06-07-05, 10:55 PM | My $0.02 worth. Anything I don't mention is correct. Although the template says to drop any class HD (to a minimum of 1), that assumes that the creature had class HD to begin with. A bugbear just has racial HD, so the zombie bugbear should have only 6HD, not 7. (This is supported by the fact that the sample Troglodyte Zombie has 4HD, not 5) Assuming the zombie bugbear is still wearing its equipment, its AC should be 10 + 2 (leather armour) + 3 (natural) + 2 (template bonus to natural armour) +1 (light shield) = 18. If unarmoured and without its shield, the zombie bugbear's AC should be 10 + 5 (natural armour) = 15. The zombie bugbear gains a slam attack. It will be at +6 (+ 3 BAB + 3 for strength) and do 1d6+3(20/x2) damage. Whilst the full attack entry for the creature should therefore change, a zombie can never make a full attack, so it's a bit of a moot point. However, it will become important if the zombie bugbear is ever disarmed. Fort save should be +2 (1/3 of 6HD). Bear in mind that your statement that the zombie is "immune to anything requiring a Fort save" is not quite correct. Undead are immune to fort save effects unless that effect can also affect objects. So, the zombie bugbear is immune to poison and disease, but not to the Disintegrate spell. |

Although the template says to drop any class HD (to a minimum of 1), that assumes that the creature had class HD to begin with. A bugbear just has racial HD, so the zombie bugbear should have only 6HD, not 7. (This is supported by the fact that the sample Troglodyte Zombie has 4HD, not 5) I was going off of a chart that had HD for a CR 2 creature at 6-7. Assuming the zombie bugbear is still wearing its equipment, its AC should be 10 + 2 (leather armour) + 3 (natural) + 2 (template bonus to natural armour) +1 (light shield) = 18. If unarmoured and without its shield, the zombie bugbear's AC should be 10 + 5 (natural armour) = 15. If you check the possessions line he does not have his armor (just his light shield) so AC=16. I think I'll go ahead and add the leather armor so the AC=18. The slam attack is listed in his melee line. Fort save should be +2 (1/3 of 6HD). Bear in mind that your statement that the zombie is "immune to anything requiring a Fort save" is not quite correct. Undead are immune to fort save effects unless that effect can also affect objects. So, the zombie bugbear is immune to poison and disease, but not to the Disintegrate spell.Yes, I goofed on the Fort save and will be adding in the rest of the line about immune to fort. Thanks for your help, Dave |
