I just have a quick question I wasn't able to answer by referencing the MM or the FAQ: For large organizations of monsters that are advanced by character classes, (such as kobolds) are the sergeants, lieutenants, etc. supposed to be advanced by PC classes or NPC classes? It matters, as creatures such as kobolds have CRs equal to their NPC level -3. PC class levels would assumedly be equal to their CR. Thus a kobold chief would either be a 6th level... I dunno... warrior with a CR of 3 or a 6th level fighter with a CR of 6. Big difference. If anyone knows what the designers had in mind I'd appreciate some illumination, especially if you could cite the rule. I know as a DM it's "whatever I say it is", but I'd like to know if there is some kind of intent behind the levels described in the "Organization" entries of the MM. Thanks!
