| Oompa03-11-06, 03:53 AM | Lets say.. An ogre.. 4 hit die, and cr 2.. I add 1 level of fighter.. He gets 5 hit die.. but does his cr increase to 5? In my eye's not.. cause the one level of fighter doesnt give him much improvement in my eyes.. So.. can anyone explain how the CR works when adding classes? |
| runestar03-11-06, 04:11 AM | An ogre should have a cr of 2, as listed in the MM(should be). When adding classes who directly enhance the monster's strengths, the cr increases by 1 for each lv added. An ogre is basically a strong bruiser, so associated classes are probably any combat-oriented class such as fighter or barbarian. Thus, an ogre fighter1 will be cr3. Note that when you add class lvs, the ogre benefits from the elite npc stat array if it previously did not already. Thus, you get to choose its base stats from a pool of "15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8" before applying the ogre's racial stat modifers. This does not increase its cr. It also receives treasure for a cr3 npc, which you should use to upgrade its eq, maybe give it a nice set of full plate, maybe a potion or 2. A non-associated class is one which does not directly enhance the ogre's strengths, and thus, for the first X lvs you take, where X is any number up to the ogre's HD, each lv increases its cr only by 1/2. Say you wanted to give it cleric lvs. Since cleric is a spellcasting class, it can be treated as non-associated. An ogre has 4 giant HD, so the first 4 cleric lvs each add only +1/2 cr. Thus, an ogre cleric4 is cr4. Afterwards. subsequent cleric lvs increase its cr at a 1 for 1 rate. Hope this helps. :) |
