Its flesh is warped and smoothed uniform obsidian material with a curious gothic beauty. Its stalk-eyes glow with lunar luminescence and its central eye swirls with light and darkness. An eye of the dead is a beholder risen from the grave. It is usually assisted by some necromantic magic or negative energy charge (deliberate or otherwise), but creatures as mentally and magically powerful as eye tyrants can sometimes halt their ascent into the outer planes and awkwardly force their soul back into their dead body, concentrating and heightening the negative energy in the vessel to serve their new purpose. Eyes of the Dead lose their neurotic egocentric concept of “true beholderhood” after the epiphany that comes with death and its subsequent inversion. They are less adherent to the lawful evil alignment, and tend to have a more open mind. Their powers adapted to an undead state, they tend to make use of their abilities by cultivating a following of undead minions. Intelligent undead not under their direct control can often be cowed with their Halt Undead and Undeath to Death eye rays. With their numerous powers of terror and chill touch they can send creatures running undead or alive. Most Eyes of the Dead become tyrants of death, ruling undead minions and slaying all in their path with some minor exception determined by personal preference (such as not harming children or leaving elves alone). There are however many non-evil eyes of the dead. A few of them paradoxically become slayers of the undead, aided by their potent eye beams in what is often a lonely and thankless task for a creature so monstrous. Regardless of behavior, living beholders fear and despise eyes of the dead, not least for their lack of insane egocentrism. This despisal does not prevent them from recognizing the amount of threat such entities pose to them. With so many eye rays useless against against an undead creature and its minions, the eye of the dead can bring fear to eye tyrants even without their Fear eye-ray. Eyes of the Dead speak Beholder, Common, Undercommon, and Infernal. Combat: Eyes of the Dead can usually count on frightful presence and gaze attacks to drive away insignificant creatures. They use Finger of Death on the most potent threat, with Cone of Death and Fear directed at secondary threats or as back-ups, and rainbow of weakness and chill touch used to impede lesser enemies. At the same time they keep enemies occupied with their undead minions and use Inflict Moderate Wounds to heal themselves or their flunkies. When faced with undead, they make the most serious threats flee with a Chill Touch if Undeath To Death fails to slay them, keeping others at bay with Halt Undead. They will rebuke/control undead opponents that seem to be of moderate power but not strong enough to overpower them. Eyes of the Dead face constructs by hurling them or objects at them via telekinesis and swamping them with undead minions. Frightful Presence(ex): save dc:16, causes creatures within sight to be shaken for 5d6 rounds. A creature that successfully saves successfully is immune to the frightful presence for the rest of the day. Creatures with more hit dice than the eye of the dead are immune, and those with half its hit dice or less (5hd/levels) are frightened instead. Those with 2hd are panicked. Eye Rays: an Eye of the Dead has ten eye rays that follow the normal rules for a beholder’s eye ray. They have save DCs of 16, 11th caster level for purpose of calculated effect, a range of 150ft, and require a ranged touch attack to hit. Animate Dead As the spell but one target, cannot control more than 44HD of undead Rainbow of Weakness (or Ray of Enfeeblement) see necromancer ( http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=592532) spell list. Cone of Death (or see necromancer spell list, single-target ray instead of cone Fear as per the spell, single target Finger of Death as per the spell, deals 3d6+11 damage on a successful save Transmute undeath to death destroys undead target of up to 11d4HD, will save negates Inflict ModerateWounds 2d8+10 neg. energy damage, heals undead, 2nd lvl spell Chill Touch as spell Halt Undead as the spell, will save negates Telekinesis as per spell, moves 275lb, uses charisma mod Multifarious Eye(su): the central eye of an Eye of the Dead has a few special powers. First, it creates a grimfield effect, the shape and size of which is identical to that of an anti-magic cone. Second, twice per day, within the same cone it can release a Rebuke Undead power as if by a cleric of 9th level. Third, it has a gaze attack. This is a gaze deals 1d12 negative energy damage and two temporary strength damage. The save dc is 20, which is charisma-based and includes a +2 racial bonus to the DC. All of these can be resumed or suppressed as a free action by opening or closing the central eye. Deadlight(ex): the decomposed tissue in an eye of the dead’s eyes has a natural phosphorescence. This glow sheds shadowy illumination throughout its reach. The light covers areas in the indigo, green, and infared range that combine to create an unsettling effect, incurring a -3 morale penalty to saving throws against fear for creatures with normal vision. |
| thasis04-10-06, 09:46 PM | Awsome monster. On tiny mistake though. HP: 71 HP (6.5*11) |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.04-10-06, 11:14 PM | Fixed, and thanks. ^^ |
| Darth Sephiroth04-11-06, 02:28 PM | Hasn't there already been something like this already done in the Forgotten Realms book. The Beholder Death Tyrant? |
| Talisman04-11-06, 05:24 PM | There are however many non-evil eyes of the dead. A few of them paradoxically become slayers of the undead, aided by their potent eye beams in what is often a lonely and thankless task for a creature so monstrous. So, insanely evil beholders become undead (which are typically evil), and this often makes them become...good? This doesn't make much sense to me. the eye of the dead can bring fear to eye tyrants even without their Fear eye-ray. Multifarious Eye(su): the central eye of an Eye of the Dead has a few special powers. First, it creates a grimfield effect, the shape and size of which is identical to that of an anti-magic cone. What the heck is a "grimfield effect?" Aside from these two quibbles, it looks pretty cool. |
| savant_warlord1304-11-06, 05:37 PM | It's been done before, see Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting |
| Ocom04-11-06, 05:42 PM | yeah! Anyway those still reading this might want to make something original like a blind or headless beholder. That i would like to see. |

So, insanely evil beholders become undead (which are typically evil), and this often makes them become...good? This doesn't make much sense to me. Well, undead being typically evil is one thing I want to single-handedly change. Anyway, the become less often Lawful Evil because dying and comming back halflway in a quasi-concious state wonderfully clears away the neurotic world-perception that leads them to their lawful evil behavior. the eye of the dead can bring fear to eye tyrants even without their Fear eye-ray. Multifarious Eye(su): the central eye of an Eye of the Dead has a few special powers. | R.M.G.C.L.F.04-11-06, 08:18 PM | It's been done before, see Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting There is a ghost beholder, and a zombie beholder, but I have the forgotten realms campaign setting book and I can find no sentient corporeal beholders. If you know of such a creature, kindly never talk to me about it. Ever. |
| thasis04-12-06, 01:30 AM | Just because something SIMILIAR has been done, doesn't mean this isn't still cool. |
