| Magrus01-27-07, 06:10 PM | I am looking for something simple, but apparently it is harder to find than I thought. I am looking for a mount that could be used in a mountain campaign with a climb speed. Preferably one that doesn't fly, and it's obscenely high in HD/CR. Something that say, a 7th level character could tame and ride. The only thing I have noticed that seems suitable would be a Leapord/Mountain Lion, which is a CR 2 and is suitable for a 4th level Druids alternative Animal Companion. Short of delving into Underdark creatures for a drow riding lizard or say, the Stone Drake from Races of Stone, which is intelligent and way too high in CR I am lost on what else I could use. Would anyone have a better suggestion on this? I have an encounter that I want to use a mountain type mounted warrior character as a NPC against my party. Something capable of climbing around and providing mobility on a mountain side in order to provide a long term encounter for the party. I would prefer not having to resort of making some sort of centaur varient in order to accomplish this, but, I may end up having to. I'm stumped. |
| Return of the Flumph01-27-07, 06:39 PM | A Large monstrous spider. If the drow and duergar have managed to tame them, there is no reason other races shouldn't. |
| Magrus01-27-07, 06:44 PM | Hmm, that could prove to be interesting. I didn't think of that, as they are mindless. If I can't find something intelligent, that will definately be useful as a mount. Especially if I use a hunting spider and get that bonus to spot and jump instead of having a web-spinning spider. |
| Darth Sephiroth01-27-07, 11:58 PM | Take the Cliff Raptor (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/fw/20040509a) and advance it to 9 HD while training it as a mount. |
| RLRapp01-28-07, 12:52 AM | Actually, Mindless creatures can't be trained as mounts. The drow and others use magic to control them, but they can't be trained normally. Try a Dire Wolverine instead.:D |
| Darth Syntax01-28-07, 01:15 AM | I think a dire Ibex or mountain goat would be fantastic. |
| Magrus01-28-07, 10:02 AM | I know I have seen the Ibex somewhere, but perhaps you could recall what book it is in (if it is statted up somewhere)? I have a large number of books and it would help having direction before searching each and every one I own. :embarrass Dire wolverines might not fit so well as Dire Apes due to the environments, as Dire Apes are found in Warm Mountains and the wolverines aren't. I could use either though. Thanks for the suggestion. |
