Cold Iron? [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-18-04, 09:33 PM I bought the 3.5E MM, and some monsters have DR/ cold iron. Could someone please give me some clue of what this material is?
It's price, etc...

04-18-04, 10:12 PM Cold Iron is just iron that was shaped without the benefit of using a forge. It tends to be more brittle than forged iron.

Well, that's the historically-correct answer (I think), but it's not what cold iron is in D&D. D&D cold iron is some sort of different form of iron that has some limited magic disrupting ability. The only game effects this has are its ability to penetrate the DR of certain creatures (mostly demons and fey, which are inherently magical) and the fact that it's harder to make magic items out of cold iron. It also has to be worked at cooler temperatures than normal iron, but that's pretty much just flavor. Cold iron items cost twice as much as their normal iron counterparts. Unlike most special materials, you can make non-masterwork cold iron items.

Does it weights the same as normal iron?
How is it harder to make magic items with it?

As for its properties against inherantly magical entities, Cold Iron is traditionally a weapon feared by both the fey and demons/devils in mythology. It is one material that is bane to their existance. Merely touching iron can kill fey in some stories. Since Demons and Devils are different in DnD, they only had demons which are chaotic like the fey, suffer from cold iron.
