I'm thinking a golem team.

Mithral and Adamantine golems can cover eachother's weaknesses pretty well

Or, if you want the characters to survive the first round, use a stone golem that is programmed to stand still (and look like a staue) until the characters get really close

Sorry to sound idiotic (though at the rate I'm going and beggining to think I may take some sort of masochistic pleasure from it) but where would I find the adamantine golem? As in which book would it be found, we're moving all my stuff around the house and all my books are locked away somewhere.

both adamantine and mithral golems are in the Epic Level Handbook.

I'm sure the bats and mice in my attic will enjoy reading up further on level 20+ characters.

Anyways remember to add texture and surprise to the whole thing, sorry to sound pushy but if you want to make a stone statue jump to life and start attacking the party then if theres to be any surprise then all things need to have the same amount of detail. If there's a note on the floor give that as much detail as said statue, maybe even slightly more. That way the encounter does not startof with false surprise (when the characters would be surprised by the occurence but all of the players saw it coming off from a long way).

I think someone dug up a program that listed all the creatures in their chosen environments and you could do a search with it. Not sure if anyone could find it again.

effigies would allow a great deal of variety, IMO. which can be nice... keeps the construct theme going, but you have a wide variety of abilities available to play with.

If your party level is 12, then individual constructs ranging from CR 7 to CR 17 are all possibly appropriate. I would suggest looking at the MMII, MM3, and Fiend Folio for a good selection of constructs, as the SRD is rather thin in that department.

Two Bronze Serpents (MMII, CR 10) would make an EL 12 encounter.

Clockwork Horrors (MMII) - One Adamantine Horror (CR 9), Two Platinum Horrors, (CR 7) and Four Gold Horrors (CR 5) should work out to be around EL 12. I'd be inclined to stick in eight Electrum Horrors as well, both for flavor and to help justify the 12 EL. (really, the Gold and Electrum Horrors should be a nonfactor against 12th level PCs, so they're mostly there as window dressing for the Platinum and Adamantine Horrors) Be aware that the Adamantine Horror is a very "binary" monster: it has tremendous, terrible power that far exceeds what you'd expect for a CR 9 creature, but it's got a few gaping weaknesses that totally negate it's frightening power...

Three Rogue Eidolons (MMII, CR 9) works out to EL 12.

A Slaughterstone Eviscirator (MM3, CR 12) is an option.

Two Clay Golems (CR 10) gives an EL of 12.

One Stone Golem clocks in at CR 11, while an Iron Golem is CR 13.

Six Flesh Golems work out to be around EL 12.

There are other golems in the books mentioned, but that's a pretty good list to choose from...
