katarl 04-30-06, 05:35 AM	My character is soon to become a father (ahhhh!), and would like an affordable, intelligent medium construct or other perfectly loyal type to look after family members while adventuring (and possibly one for himself too). Any suggestions? It can't have the evil descriptor, and it should not cost more than 60 000gp market price. I don't want a shield or rune guardian. Also, I'd like to know the errata for the nimblewright, or where to find it, if possible. Similarly, are there any infantry/archer type constructs of cost 20 000 or less for general guarding of estate and such, with a visual ability or two. Spells that can guard a house without triggering on a friendly would be helpful too. I'm not too keen on passwords to not trigger an effect. Thanx in advance.
Lyinginbedmon 04-30-06, 05:57 AM	The most obvious 'guardian construct' that comes to mind is the Warforged, though I'm not sure how much they would cost (Probably hireling-esque) and they might cost more in the long-run. Other than that, there really aren't that many constructs that are intended as bodyguards other than Shield and Rune.

However, its a little pricey and it doesn't guarantee loyalty. Why not shield guardian? They are perfect! Always hated them, they're so blocky and they have killed my character on at least one occasion. Rune guardians are better, but really expensive. Warforged Again, it doesn't guarantee loyalty, or even competence. I'd rather have a human bodyguard. It doesn't have to say it was designed as a bodyguard, just a moderately powerful construct with an intelligence score and no loyalty issues. If anyone has made any homebrew constructs, i'd love to hear them, especially lesser varieties. Looking through my books, Nimblewright seems best so far.

Shield guardians are excellent protectors. If your character can't overcome his prejudice, then he isn't a very good father.
The Colonel 04-30-06, 09:14 PM	If it has to be a construct, there are some cheap golems in Dragon (#341 IIRC) which don't exactly break the bank. A wax one made to look like him might be quite effective ... at the cost of freaking his family out something chronic, the wood or paper could be quite nice and the tin might even be useful around the house. Scrap and fungus golems might put him on the wrong side of his wife though...

Ront Iron-Roar 04-30-06, 10:19 PM	Why not Dreadguard from the Monster Manual 2? More or less an animated suit of armor and weaponry. Easily diguised and easy to manage. 40,000 with enough gold left to enhance it.

The errata is as follows... Nimblewright: Construct; 5 ft./5 ft.; Balance +9, Jump +19, Tumble +22; Combat Expertise (B), Combat Reflexes (B), Dodge, Improved Disarm, Mobility, Spring Attack; LA +6; Gains 20 bonus hit points (change to Construct type); HD become 10d10+20 (75 hp). Change rapier-hand damage to 2d6+4/15–20, and adjust Augmented Criticals entry accordingly. Caster Level: 18th; Prerequisites: Craft Construct, geas/quest, haste, limited wish, and polymorph any object; Market Price: 22,000 gp; Cost to Create: 18,500 gp (including 7,500 for the body) + 580 XP. ...at the budget you were talking about, you could just about purchase 3 of these things. One for your kid, your lover, AND yourself!

Ahhh- thats a little extreme- not a good father for choosing a different golem? The main thing is that both he and I don't like how it looks- or its size. It just won't fit through the door! Besides, *every* wizard has a shield guardian looking after them, and it advertises that the parent is scared for their safety, it could even be a liability. Wood is one of my preferred ideas, added with a protection vs fire spell or item. Also, the most recent dragon has a rune golem, but its druid only. The errata is as follows... Yay! I'm afraid I don't have MM3, and alchemical golem sounds... dangerous. Irons good, but its a little pricey, and big. Flesh requires an evil spell. He can cast it, its just not his style. Theres not any item or construct that can create elemental guardians (especially air) is there? The wizard in question is an elemental savant, you see. BTW, would that affect the childs race in any way? I'm thinking it might be an air genasi. Thanks for all the responses, they've been great.
Mithral Icesilver 05-01-06, 06:04 PM	Depends on just how good an elemental savant your character is. Fifth level on up, I'd say there's a decent chance the child might be an air genasi, perhaps 10% per level (50-50 at fifth, 60% at sixth, and so on). If you've hit tenth level, the child might end up a half-air elemental (Manual of the Planes, in case you're wondering). I can't say I know of any elemental golems. Of course, if you want an elemental guardian for your child, you could actually get an elemental creature to do it: a sylph (MMII), air elemental, or invisible stalker.
