| rfox09-16-03, 03:53 PM | Are there guidelines anywhere on how to convert a 3.0 monster to 3.5? Maybe they are in the 3.5 Monster Manual, but since I'm on a limited budget, I'm just sticking with the SRD for now. |
| cwslyclgh09-16-03, 04:11 PM | for most monsters the stats will remain exactly the same... oozes will lose thier bonus ooze HP, but they gave each of them a higher con modifier to compensate, just do something similar if you convert an ooze, vermin loose thier poison DC bonus, if the creature has less feats then it should have (monsters now get 1 feat + 1 feat/3HD, just like PC's) simply add some more until it has as many feats as it needs (note that monsters with an int of -- have no skills or feats unless they are bonus skills or feats regardless of HD)... re do the creatures skill points, using the skills listed as class skills, trhe new skill point tottal for most creatures will be 2+ int modifier x (HD+3) with a minimum of 1 skill point per HD, outsiders use 8+ int modifier x (HD+3) instead, Dragons and Fey use 6+ int modifier x (HD+3) and Undead use 4+int modifier x (HD+3) finaly DR will change somewhat, weak creatures will get DR5/, moderatly powerful creatures will get DR 10/ while powerful creatures will get DR15/ for most things this will be magic after the slash... demons and fey will be vulnerable to cold iron (more power full demons, such as balors, it takes magic and cold iron, weaker demons such as dretch, it takes magic or cold iron)... devils will be similar to demons but they are vulnerable to silver rather then cold iron (with more powerful devils requiring both magic and silver, and weak devils requiring magic or silver) and most constructs with DR had it changed to */adamantine you can get already done conversions of the monsters in the Epic Level Handbook, manual of the Planes, Monster Manual 2, and Feind Folio >>>HERE<<< (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20030718a) hope that helps :) |
| (Psi)SeveredHead09-16-03, 07:38 PM | The MM has guidelines on CR to AC ratios, CR to attack bonus ratios, CR to hp ratios (this didn't change from 3.0), and so forth. IMO save DCs should be roughly 9 + CR, lower if it's an instant death effect and higher if it requires an attack roll (not a touch attack roll) to use. I've found 3.5 monsters to be generally more well-rounded. I thought the silly 3.0 colossal scorpion, for instance, had too many hp, too low AC, too high saving throws, too high attack bonus, too high poison save DC ... the first four were fixed, IMO, but the now-lower poison save DC is still ridiculous. You can't win them all :D |
