Ok, I'm starting to DM game here soon and it will be my first 3.5 edition game. I'm having a bit of trouble with figuring CR and the like.

I want the first encounter in my game to be a Half Farspawn Orc Barb 3 Warchief 1 along with a few tribe mates(the number can vary). The party is lvl 6. I'd like this to be about a cr 6, but a 7 or an 8 would be fine aswell. Will this be too powerful for a group of 4-6 6th lvl, many who will be divine casters? No, I don't know the PCs, yet.

It's currently CR 5. Each class level gives it 1 point of CR, and since it has a total of 4 HD, the Half-Farspawn template adds 1 point of CR.

If you give it another level of Barbarian or Warchief, it will increase to CR 7, since it will have 5 HD, and the Half-Farspawn template adds 2 points of CR instead of 1 starting at HD number 5.

It will not be a too powerful encounter in either case for a normal party of 4 6th-level PCs. It will be relatively easy in the CR 5 case, and still moderately easy as a CR 7; at least when it's alone.

Now, to add the tribe mates. If we assume they are all Orc Warrior 2s, 2 of them will be EL 3, and 4 will be EL 5. So, if you want a total Encounter Level of 7, the CR 5 version of the Warchief can have 4 Orc Warrior 2s along. The CR 7 version can have the same 4 Orc Warrior 2s along for a total Encounter Level of 8.

In addition to Morwen's excellent math above, I would add that if you have 4 PC's, the EL 8 will be a bit tough, but if you have 6 PC's definitely go with eight or even consider 9. A team of 6 adventurers really messes with the CR system.
