Are they facing 4 CR 2 animals for the sake of treasure rolling and experience stuff? (I know animals dont drop) Also, when leveling up a wolf enemy, you are supposed to increase HD3 medium or HD4-6 if they are large. Does that mean that you roll a medium wolf at (2d8 + 4)*3 per level? |

They can have Hit Dice (HD) advancement, but that is not the same thing. An increase in HD does mean an increase in CR, but not at a one for one ratio. Wolves, for instance, need an increase of 3 HD before their CR increases by 1. Other factors, such as size increases, can also affect CR. Other monster types also increase CR at a different ratio, such as dragons increasing CR every 2 HD. The advancement section does not mean bonus HD, it means what the HD become. For instance, a wolf's advancement lists 3 HD (Medium); 4-6 HD (Large). A wolf's base HD is always d8, because it is an animal. 3 HD means that the wolf has 3d8+3*Constiution modifier. 4 HD means that the wolf has 4d8+4*Constiution modifier. This means that a wolf can be increased up to 3 HD as a Medium creature, but then at 4 HD, 5 HD, and 6 HD, the wolf is a Large creature. At those levels, the wolf's HD is 3d8+6 (19 hp), 4d8+16 (34 hp) [note that Constitution increases with size], 5d8+20 (42 hp), and 6d8+24 (51). At 4 HD, the wolf becomes a CR 2 creature (+1 for being Large), and at 5 HD, the wolf becomes a CR 3 because of HD advancement.
