How much should I raise the CR of an atropal that has just spent an hour buffing itself devouring herds of cattle or peasants? It can make 2 touch attacks per round, each of which buffs it with 20 temporary hit points for one hour. 20 hp*2 touch attacks*600 rounds per hour=24000 temporary hit points!!!

Well, first you have to think that since the temporary hit points run out after an hour that it's going to be losing hit points at a rate of 40 hit points a round, since its been building it up for an hour any that it gained first will begin to disappear.
I really have no idea about the CR, but I just thought I would put thhat information out there.

That's why I specified 600 rounds, one hour's worth. If the PCs go to confront it in the middle of a killing spree it will be near that maximum, or it may teleport to battle them after charging up. Losing less than 0.1% of its hp each round to fading is not likely to matter much in an epic battle.

I think if anything this should be an ad hoc exp reward. Cr's are not adjusted for a monster using its abilities to boost its power. Such as a monster using nay number of its SLA's to buff itself, or a summoner summoning monsters. You don't get experience for slaughtering summoned mosters - because they are already accounted for in the CR of the summoner. Similarly with the atropal boosting its HP using its granted abilities. Granted, these are a god-awful amount of hit points, but this is an epic encounter.

Or it could take the cows with it to the Astral plane, absorb them there, then cast whatever spell it is that the Gith use which halts the time warping effects when leaving the astral plane to play as if it had absorbd all of those cows at the same time, giving you one whole hour of that boosted HP, as long as has that Gith time buff on.

Encounter level is accounted for if the summoned monsters are there pre-encounter. The same goes for hit points. If he acquires them during the fight, the EL won't increase. If he acquires them before it, it will.

No but you get exp if they have any advanteges. Just as an ambush is +4CR, this is similarly nasty.

I would say around +8 CR. 16x times as hard an encounter sounds right.

That's insane. With that CR adjustment, the players will likely rip it to shreds without getting harmed.

None really.
Temp hp from the same source overlap, rather than stack.
As such, you can never gain more than 20 temp hp at any 1 time this way...;)

Where? Where?! Where's the + CR for ambush write-up? Never remember seeing that but I love how it sounds. I love xp.

You'd need to add the CR of all the cows to that encounter.
