09-09-03, 08:52 AM The creature is a mass of writhing tentacles, extending from an immobile Medium-sized bulk of vegetation.

The viny tentacles have a reach of 15'. Most Grapsing Vines have 4 to 8 tentacles available to them; cut tentacles die and are regrown at a rate of 1 per week. The tentacles make touch attacks at +0, inflicting d2 damage on a hit as a nasty piercing spike penetrates the target's armor and/or skin; the tentacle then loops itself around the impaled location. On following rounds, the tentacle and spike together cause 1d4 damage automatically (first point is piercing from spike, all others are constriction).

If a vine-tentacle is wrapped around a target, that target must make Concentration checks to cast spells (from "continuing damage"); otherwise, the vines don't impede movement or action other than limiting the wrapped foe to remaining within 15' of the bulk. The vines can be unwrapped by making a grapple check against +4, or burst with a STR check DC 20, or cut [AC 13 (1 size, 2 natural armor), 4 hp (which don't reduce the bulk's hit points)].

The fibrous bulk of the Grasping Vine is AC 16 (10 pts natural armor, -4 dex). It can thrash a target that is adjacent to it, whipping thorny vines at the foe (+4 attack, d4+2 slashing damage), but is otherwise helpless once its vine-tentacles are cut.

09-09-03, 01:26 PM As a reference, I estimated it at CR 2...

a party of 5 8th level characters mowed through a pair of them (as expected) in about four rounds, including the suprise round... but the vines were just a set up and delay tactic for the Shambling Mounds that used them as warning devices.
