PCs will encounter a programmed Image. The effreeti will cast wall of fire around as many as possible. The first one to jump out will be shrunk (spell). Effreeti will cast Pyrotechnics on wall of fire to blind PCs. Keep in mind that Effreeti will be at least 60' away (unless spells dictate differently). Then effeeti will use Scorching ray. When the PCs close for melee, the effreeti will touch one with Plane Shift to the elemental plane of fire. For melee, effreeti will use produce flame then normal attack to inflict fire damage with normal attack damage. Then he will turn invis. and cast another wall of fire. The PCs seem doomed according to these tactics. Does any one else see the effreeti as having a wrong CR rating??? |
| The Abominable Darkling08-13-05, 05:55 PM | Well, first off all, it will take the efreeti several rounds to cast all those spells. During this time, the PCs won't be just standing around twiddling their thumbs. Second, the PCs get saving throws against most of the effects you mention. It is highly unlikely that the entire party will be blinded by pyrotechnics, for example. Nevertheless, the efreeti may indeed be too tough for your 7th-level party. The actual difficulty of a monster varies greatly depending on the players' skills, the party composition, the various character builds, the house rules in effect, and so on. Only you can judge what will or will not be an appropriate challenge for your PCs. |
| Ogre4Hire08-13-05, 06:01 PM | I think you're using the SLAs wrong. First of all, the Efreet only has Programmed Image cast if he's expecting trouble or in his lair. Second, Planeshift targets yourself and willing creatures. Third, any party that's reached 7th level and hasn't figured out how to protect themselves from fire or flying opponants deserves what's going to happen to them. Forth, just how many rounds are the PCs going to sit there and let Mr. E cast spells before they do anything? They should be pounding on him by round two, so unless they haven't seen him (and it's really, really hard to miss a Wall of Fire), he shouldn't have too much time to prepare. Keep in mind that even if a creature has an "At will" ability, they still can't use it more than 2 or 3 times in a single encounter unless things are seriously going against the PCs. Plus, they can only use a single ability per round, so if he uses Wall of Fire, he can't use Scorching Ray. |
| DMDaddy08-13-05, 06:20 PM | Round1: PCs enter room with Permanent Image walls. So, effreeti will see them enter and will and concentrate on moving another Permanent Image effreeti who stands 30' away from PCs. Round2: PCs will attempt to engage Permanent Image effreeti and may make a Save to det. the Illusion. Mean while effreeti will cast wall of fire. Round3: PCs should be attempting to jump out of wall of fire. Meanwhile effreeti will cast shrink on 1st PC to jump out. Round4: Some PCs should be running toward effreeti. Meanwhile effreeti will cast Pyrotech on wall of fire and may blind a few of them. Round5: Pcs should be within 30' of effreeti who will cast scorch ray. Round6: PCs melee with effretti who will cast Plane Shift which states, "You move yourself or some other creature to another plane". Round7: Effreeti flys to make distance which should be farther than the PCs can run in 1 round. This will give effreeti a chance to cast other spells before PCs can close in. The rewards: If PCs get effreeti to 5 hps, the effreeti will offer 1 limited wish to each PC. So, they may die or some of them will, but the survivors will recieve a wish and hopefully bring back to life their fallen commrads. |

Ahem, it should be Wish Efreeti dont have Limited Wish; and the PCs wouldve earned it :D |
